Hi, I have just joined lonelyplanet and this is my first post. I am hoping someone can help me. I am planning a trip to Paris from Thurs to Sun in Sept. I am a 41 year old woman and would be on my own. I have been single for a while and hoping to find 'romance' in the city of love. I would like to go to a place where I can meet interesting people/ somewhere where it is not awkward on your own and where you are likely to meet people from a diverse background and my age group. Not really into the bar or nightclub scene especially if too loud. Cafes or outdoor spaces etc would be more my kind of thing. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Go to Mont St.Parnasse and drink a coffee. Spent some time at Centre Pompidou! Paris is a very open minded city! Maybe you can also do one walking tour! you will meet people there for sure!
Well Chick,
If your looking for love Paris can be the place to find it. Joining a tour would be a great place to start, there are several to choose from. The cafes are also a great place to start. Try to blend in to the Parisian culture, do some research into what is the norm to camouflage yourself a little from the average tourist. This may be obvious, However be polite and courteous even if you don't speak French this will go a long way to making your trip more productive. Blend in to the culture and I assure you, you will find, at the very least a lasting love of a great city.

Mont St. Parnasse? OP won't meet anyone there -- it doesn't exist. There is an area called Montparnasse, but it's mostly the name of a train station and an office tower.
I'd suggest finding something in Paris which you like wherever you live...
Here's the Paris City site which will have info on almost everything going on in Paris...
http://en.parisinfo.com/discovering-paris
On the top line there are tabs, select Going Out...you'll be asked for dates. You didn't specify which Thursday so I used the 10th.
There are sorts of festivals, many of them free; jazz, classical music, opera plus so much more.
I remember in the film Charade the stamp market where Audrey Hepburn took her friend's son (great film), and yes, there is a stamp market 3 times a week:

I'm not saying you should pretend to like stamps only that there is something for almost everyone in Paris and what interests you could earn the interest of someone who shares it....
And to broaden your view of Paris, visit our friend's site (his posts are the best...photo essays about Paris and not from a tourists' point of view:
http://anyportinastorm.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=paris
Too bad you won't be there 30 August, it's the Festival of Ganesh:

(Kerouac has reported on this in the past...but the site has so much more...)
And....you can see how Parisians dress if you want to look less like a tourist. My disguise was a shopping bag from Tati (not a tourist spot...)
but now that plastic bags ae not always given out, your own used but unbranded bag (make it an unobtrusive fashion accessory, just like the scarf around the neck (heavy in winter, light in summer)...
What ARE your interests and what arrondisement are you staying in?

Hi there, many thanks for taking time to write all this. Sooo helpful and very much appreciated. I have not booked anything yet as it has been a last minute plan( Sept 18- Sept 21). I was going to go on a coach tour to Monet's house on Saturday. I love to visit art galleries and learn about art. Other than that, I am pretty flexible. Love local markets too. What arrondisement would you advise to stay ? Can you recommend any nice hotels? Thanks!
