Hello TTers - this is my first post so I hope I'm doing it right!

I am planning to visit Paris for the first time on 18-21 May, as a lone female traveller. I am travelling on a bit of a budget and have been looking for something no more than £100ish. I have come across two hotels that may have potential:

Grande Hotel de L'Avenue
14 Rue Rampon
75011 Paris
and
Hotel de la Jatte
4, Boulevard du Parc
92200 Neuilly-sur-Seine

I have google mapped them and can see that Grande Hotel de L'Avenue is much more central than Hotel de la Jatte, but costs more and is only 2 stars (vs Jatte's 3 stars). I am not sure which is the better option - what is the general consensus? The website for Hotel de la Jatte says the city centre is 10/15 away - is this realistic? Is the metro easy to manage from this location?

Thank you for all your help - I am a student with not much travel experience, especially not on my own, so ANY advice at all would be gratefully received!

I'd go for the hotel in the 11th. Neuilly is a quiet and expensive suburb to the West of Paris and although the access to the centre is good, it'll be a bit of trek

Sorry I cannot help you with those two hotels, but you could go to www.tripadvisor.com and check to see if there are comments on these hotels.

Here is a hotel that I have stayed at a couple times and would recommend. It is well located in the Latin Quarter and two metros within a block. Julie at the front desk was most helpful. Should be iwell with n your rice range.

When setting out on a journey, do not seek advice from those who have never left home.

sorry, just flabbergasted by a poor student with a budget of only about 150 EUR a night. There are 100s of hotels in Paris that are perfectly acceptable and charge between 35 and 70 EUR for a room. So if money is an issue look a bit further- i can give some addresses if you need help

mmm...my budget isn't 150 EUR a night...it's 150 EUR total! I'm not sure where to stay - I am going by myself to recharge my batteries after my finals and just want somewhere to relax (i.e. not really loud) but with a good atmosphere. I am into second hand shops, buying old records, art, music, shopping, drinking coffee and people watching... so any suggestions? I don't mind catching the metro or walking around a good bit.

Thanks for everyone's help so far - you are great!

If that is your budget for the 4 days, then you should look for a hostel rather than a hotel. There are cheap, small hotels but they might not all be on the internet. Given your interests, you should stay centrally -- either the Latin Quarter (old record shops along rue des Ecoles and Blvd St Germain as you go east from St Michel), or else the 11th around Republique or Bastille.

Definitely not Neuilly --just an expensive residential neighbourhood.

Neuilly is way out of town, whereas rue de Rampon is just off Republique and so is much more central.

However, in a much nicer area is the hotel du Midi, just off place Denfert Rochereau: Hotel du Midi. It's a very civilisaed area, on the left bank, great transport, with the wonderful food street of rue Daguerre close by, and direct airport connections.

Book early, as it fills quickly.

OP, since you are new here i guess you have learned your first lesson how to get useful repsonses: the more exact you are, the better the information you get. Everybody here assumed you had 150 EUR per night to spend. So pls let us know if this 150 EUR budget is only for accomodation, or is that your whole budget for 4 days in Paris? and how many night are you looking to spend? 3 or 4?

I agree with bjd that you should try to book a hostel- that way you are likely to meet other people as well. if you must have your own room then you can find a cheap hotel (with toilet down the hall) for 35-40 EUR a night. I recommend though that you buy a good budget guidebook (Let's Go is best for budget travellers, Rough Guide and LP will do, Time OUt is too upmarket IMHO) and looka t the list of hostels and cheap hotels. or google 'paris hostel'. Sorry, I haven't stayed in a hostel for a while so can't help you with specifc addresses.

Sorry for any confusion!!

Many years ago, on my first trip to Paris, I'd stayed in Neuilly. It wasn't the greatest travel mistake I've ever made (it's a nice enough area), but you'll spend too much time commuting!
