...we need some helpful suggestions. We own a couple of hectares of a hill above our house and a neighbouring property. Three weeks ago there was a rockfall from our land onto a neighbour's house. Our insurer will pay for the actual damage but not for preventative work to stop further rockfalls. Our mayor is useless. The insurance agent is so unsymapthetic as to be rude. Some folk at the prefecture are concerned but haven't produced any results.
The mayor has issued a decree forbidding entry to the danger area (meaning our neighbour cannot return home) and won't lift it until there has been a diagnostic survey and necessary work carried out. That is at our charge (he says). We have been quoted 25,000 euros (plus tax) for the survey (not the work). The whole business has moved into the Premier League of costs.
Has anybody living in France had a similar experience? Or can point us towards a helpful organisation or internet site?

I'll just add that my idea is to donate as a gift the parcel of land to the state/department/commune so it ceases to be our problem. Any clever lawyers out there think this is feasible?

Go to your nearest DDE office and ask them for help
Which prefecture are you in? PM me if you want

Thanks Kira.
The man from the Prefecture who made the initial report suggested we approach DDE. However someone else said the DDE has no funds for dealing with a private matter. Do you think it would still be worthwhile approaching them?
We live in the Herault, in a tiny commune midway between Bedarieux and St Pons.
