I know it almost sounds like a cliche, but I have been dreaming of the lavendar fields in Provence for a long time... Any idea of when the lavendar season starts and ends?
Any other suggestions on travelling in the region would also be greatly appreciated. (For example, would it be distressingly hot in southern France in July / Augugst generally?)
Cheers!

It will be hot in July/August in Provence, but most likely not unbearable. This site has detailed info on weather in Southern France.
From my experience, august might be too late for lavender. When I stayed in the Provence end of july last year, there were only a few small fields left above the Gorges du Tarn, everything else had already been harvested, but maybe I'm mistaken.

We were in the Provence from late June till early/mid July and this is when the lavender is at its best, e.g. in full bloom and not harvested yet.
These fields, with the blue skies as a backdrop, are just magnificient. We were not the only ones -- we also observed professional photographers doing some photo shoots with models.
