My wife and I (both in our 70s) have booked to arrive in Calais, (with our car) on 27th March. Friends we were visiting for the first 5 days have had to cancel. Can anyone recommend somewhere to visit not more than, say, 150 miles from Calais, at this time (not Paris please). We enjoy gentle driving, sight-seeing and perhaps a little shopping. Afterwards we would be going to Antwerp for 3 or 4 days.
Thanks

Hi,
Sorry your friends had to cancel but there's a lot to see and do.
Calais is in the region of Nord-Pas de Calais. Here's a link for the
cities part of tourism site for the region to start you off, then countryside..
I've found France's tourism websites are often very useful.
http://www.northernfrance-tourism.com/I-feel-like/City-life
http://www.northernfrance-tourism.com/I-feel-like/Nature
If you look on the far right on the main page, there's the pull down men
for things like gastronomy, art & culture and so on. Lots to explore.
The main city is Lille and while I've not spent much time there, I know
it is well worth the time spent.
Here's the link to the Lille tourism site:

Lonely Planet (in the Destinations section) has information on cities as well
as countries, here's the link to the section on Lille to round out that city if
it appeals to you:

You didn't say what sort of budget you were on so the links are probably the
best way to explore for lodging to fit your pocketbook (and dining and such)>
I hope this provides a good start for you, and that other forum members
will chime in with their personal recommendations.
I'd like to suggest (if you don't already use it) you check out www.viamichelin.com
It's been offering maps and directions since they started making tires and when you
put in the from/to data you can expand it to include the vehicle & fuel type (it will
calculate the fuel cost for you), charges if you use the peage, and then there's
usually the option of selection your choice of route: Michelin recommended,
highway only, no peage, scenic, and so on.
Good luck, hope you can create your own special trip.
You can go to the Louvre in Lens and also visit many WW1 battlefields and cemeteries throughout the region. Right next to Calais are Cap Gris Nez and Cap Blanc Nez, spectacular chalk cliffs with nature paths. On good days, you can see the corresponding chalk cliffs in England (Cap Gris Nez is the closest French point to England).
And of course Lille is one of the very best cities of France and should not be missed.

Thanks for these 2 sets of suggestions. The tourist web-sites linked to are good. I had never heard of the Louvre in Lens, although I am having problems getting their current programme on their website.I am sure we can find something to keep us occupied.
Cheers
David Fuller
If going to Lille you can also visit the very enjoyable museum La Piscine in Roubaix.
