Hi

Heading to Paris for about 5 days at the end of July. Any reccommendations for cheap places to stay (double room) and cheap but great places to eat?

What is your budget ? What do you consider cheap room or cheap food ? What kind of food do you like ?

Thinking perhaps between eur 60-80 per night or less if poss. I like any kind of food - not fussy!

If you are in Paris for a week, a self-catering flat might be worth your while - there are some cheap ones on Craigslist and some other boards. If you can eat in for at least some of your meals, you'll save a lot of money.

And in July, don't forget the joys of a picnic. I assume you are with a partner or friend (double room) so you don't have to fight off the fellows who decide any lone woman is in dire need of company. I thought I was too old for them to bother with, but no... they aren't dangerous, just an annoyance... You can pick up picnic supplies at any shops or supermarkets.

Try the 13th arr. for cheap and good Asian food. There are hotels there that start at 60 EUR, can't remember the name though. Easy to get back into France by metro :)

If you are really on a budget, hotels chains like Etap hotel or Formule 1 are a clean solution (less than 60 euros). A lot of them are close to metro stations but you didn't mention any neighborood so I can't suggest anything. As for food, you didn't mention any kind of prices so it is hard to figure what you consider cheap :

- Most brasserie have a plat du jour which can be cheap, say less than 10 euros (excluding drinks)
- Boulangeries propose sandwich, tarts or other cheap food
- Indian restaurant very cheap are located Passage Brady (10th arrondissement)
- Cheap vietnamese food can be found in Belleville and in the 13th arrondissement

Supermarket (for example for great French seafood) and/or boulangerie (bakery) for bread and other small stores for sausage and cheese and you are set.

Now all you need to do is pick a favourite picknick spot (my favourite is on top of the Eiffel tower or on the lawn below [Champs de Mars] after dark) and tuck in.

Another favourite with Parisians seems to be on top of one of the several department stores. Lunch would be in the 8-15€ (and up) range, depending on what you are having.
