sf girl42 . I speak not a word of French. I travel to photograph .Some of my favorite spots have been Southern Italy/Sicily ,Turkey, Andalusia and Yucatan, Mexico. Interests - abandoned villages, cave dwellings, neolithic sites; the funkier the better- don't care for scenic cute.
Any suggestions?

Lots. Shall I send you a PM (or several?)
I'll start you off here with some caves....
http://www.ariege.com/what-to-visit-in-ariege/prehistoric-caves/index.html
Of course most things on the list are worth checking out if you like that sort of thing. LOTS of ruins...this is the Ariege department, which is to the west of the Aude...which fronts on the Med...technically Ariege is in the Midi-Pyrenees but the lines are blurred.
Scenic cute is for postcards for people who don't know better. I don't buy postcards like that.
There are some great vineyards where the vines appear to be planted in nothing but rocks...the Languedoc produces some powerful reds...used to be the 'wine lake of Europe'...cheap table wine. Now they're going for AOC and they are very demanding about what qualifies. Lots of good farmers markets and you can bring your own container and have local wines (en vrac) decanted into them...drinkable and very affordable...
It's a popular area for British ex-pats and they've fit into the communities so it's not assumed that if you speak English you're a tourist...
Are you thinking of renting a place (self-catering) in one place, then move on or a b&b (chambre d'hote in French, and lots of them) or a hotel?

Thanks again sf girl. We will be using the village of Poilhes on the Midi as our home base for a couple of weeks.

Very convenient location; I've spent a night or two in Beziers and liked the city. A little further south is Narbonne, also good (histry not as dramatic)..
farmers markets:
Narbonne 11100 Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday
Halles de Narbonne 11100 every day

The hypermarches have wonderful choices for food; incredible varieties of cheeses, meats (different varieties of beef) and always fresh fish but there is a pleasure to shopping at a farmers market...no doubt your hosts will advise you of other locations, etc.
Will revert with more later.
