Hi everyone!
I am planning a ~14 night trip to France and Italy this May. It is my first time visiting Europe and I would like some advice regarding my itinerary.

4 nights in Paris
2 nights in Nice
2 nights in Cinque Terre
2 nights in Venice
4 nights in Rome

It is very tentative. I know it seems like a lot for 14 nights, but I am willing to cut places out/ consider other cities (perhaps some more cities in Provence or Tuscany instead? ) / change the distribution of days. We like enjoying scenic views, nature, new food, and small towns (but still want to see Paris and Rome for sure). We will not have a car, and are travelling from Toronto, Canada.
We would of course like to save money but we are not on a shoestring budget.
Any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Given you have 14 nights, it seems okay. One suggested amendment would be Florence rather than Venice, to keep the travel down a bit ... both cities are excellent for two days.

A train from Nice to Cinque Terre is fine ... change at Genoa. We liked Manarola and Riomaggiore in the CT, but it's all fairly subjective.

You could consider a flight from Paris to Nice.

Drop Nice (what are you planning to do there?) and increase your time in Venice. I would always suggest three days minimum for either Venice or Florence as there's so much to do there. Otherwise this looks generally fine. If you're seeing only major tourist attractions like this, a car would be a disadvantage, so don't worry about public transport.

If you want to see Provence or Tuscany on top, something else is going to have to go - that's already a fairly busy schedule. Allow half a day to get from destination to destination.

Depends a lot on what you want to do in these places, and why you chose them...

As it stands its very fast for me..possible sure, but too little time for what i would want to do ineach place.Plus as Thomas says you have allocated no travel time at all...you need to get between these places, and often that will eat up half or a full day.

In that timeframe I'd certainly cut at least one of these, maybe more.....

I would drop Nice. Then either fly or take the night train to Venice and then head to Cinque Terre on the way to Rome, giving myself an extra night in both Venice and Cinque Terre

4 nights in Paris
2 nights in Nice
2 nights in Cinque Terre
2 nights in Venice
4 nights in Rome

To my mind, that does make adequate allowance for travel (by using nights, not days) - after Paris, a day to get to Nice, and so on. OP can we assume that you're planning two nights in Nice to explore the French Riviera a bit?

A minority opinion on this forum.

The plural of anecdote is not data ... using nights makes perfect sense - unambiguous!

I'm just wondering how many night trains there are for a four-hour journey from Venice to Rome (etc.).

Huh? Please explain!

It's not hard ... have three nights in Venice, catch a choo-choo after check-out, and have four nights in Rome. If you literally catch a night train that saves you the cost of a bed somewhere that night, then you would obviously state that.
