We are Welsh/Irish, and would love to be around Bordeaux for the Wales and Ireland matches on 11 and 18 June, just to soak in the atmosphere. We have a small campervan, haven't been able to locate space in a campsite in Bordeaux. Would be grateful if anyone can come up with suggestions. Many thanks.

Hi Josie, welcome back to Thorn Tree.

I'm going to look for something but first, let's start off with info on the stade
http://www.stadiumguide.com/stade-de-bordeaux/
(and the camping site noted below is very close to the Stade...so it may already be booked up, but check that out first.

Now if you find a place to park/camp, you may need to leave it there and catch public transport
so here's info on that:
http://www.infotbc.com/en

And as it's always good to know where you are (not just physically), here's the official Bordeaux
tourism site:
http://www.bordeaux-tourism.co.uk/?_ga=1.175103970.1392982679.1457313632
info on a camping site:
http://www.bordeaux-tourism.co.uk/offre/fiche/le-village-du-lac/HPAAQU033FS0001L
http://www.camping-bordeaux.com/
This website is in French but you could do an online translation:
http://www.gites-aquitaine.org/noshebergements/camping.htm
Gironde is the department within which you find Bordeaux. This is their site:
http://www.gironde-tourisme.info/
http://www.gironde-tourisme.info/aires,de,camping,car,98.html
http://www.gironde-tourisme.info/camping,9.html
There are also brochures on line, listings of the towns within Gironde (with links) and often a town will
have a small camping location, so when all else fails, start by checking town by town.

Well that should get you started and give you some ideas....
Good luck!

France is packed with campsites and Gironde even more so.

June is by no means peak holiday season so there will be absolutely tons of availability even with the Euros on.

I disagree with mrs_trellis.

Campgrounds started taking reservations a year ago for the Bordeaux euros (we have friends who own campgrounds). Rental campervans are sold out and have been for months. I doubt there's much, if any, availability within 60 miles or more, and there's hardly any public transportation in from those far-flung places, which means the nightmare of driving and trying to find someplace to park from which you can get into town.

I do wish you good luck, and let us know how you fare.

Yeah, it sounds like mrs_trellis has no experience with the European Football Championship...
...
Footballfans love to camp out, so I would rather belive stcirq with his post.
...
Maybe you'll find a space, but I would start Google for campgrounds right away and send out
requests.
I would think that you might have more luck inland (and not on the coastline).
There might even be farmer who will rent out their space to make some money and I would look as well
into the official page of the EURO2016 and the official page of Bordeaux Tourism. As in 2008 in Switzerland we've set up some temporary camp grounds for the fans...

...the most important Thing as stcirq already wrote is to find a place, where you will have easy access to a train station...

Some 25 km fom Bordeaux there's an official aire for campingcars (so no campsite, a place to park and get some facilities). It's free. http://www.campercontact.com/en/france/aquitaine-nw-33/creon/1756/motorhome-parking-parking-velo-centre.aspx
Besides that it's allowed in France to park on all parking lots to overnight, up to a week's length. I think it's a solution because it's obvious that campsites will be fully booked in the soccer mania timeframe.

42,000+ seats and everyone going to need a place to sleep.
Onyx007, we've had a couple inquiries from other football fans, one for Lille, one for Marseille...the Lille post had already exhausted possibilities in his search for hotels (the forum did come up with options); the Marseille OP hasn't commented
how his search is going. And that stade holds over 50,000....
Of course there's still the question about do they have tickets or are they hoping to get lucky....
"March 2016
TICKET RESALE PORTAL: BUY AND SELL TICKETS
Now that the final draw has taken place and the match schedule is known, fans that purchased tickets in the general public portals might want to sell their tickets. UEFA will provide other fans a secure way to purchase these tickets. The portal will open at 12:00CET on 9 March 2016, but all fans who don't have a ticketing account can register one now to have it ready in time."

Thank you all for your replies. I think we will keep looking at options and follow up some of the suggestions, but we wont be too disappointed if we don't get into Bordeaux. As we will be in the area anyway, it just seems like a good idea! We will let you know how we get on.

You don't need to be in the stadium to have fun. The biggest parties in 2008 where in Bern and Basel at the free public-viewing venues...especially all the orange dutch people where great fun.
