Hi, we would like to stay for 3-4 days in the lake district area and was wondering where is the best place to stay. Would it be Hallstatt? We are interested in doing day hikes in the area and visiting the different lakes and towns during our stay (without a car) so access to public transport in getting around will be important. Thanks for any advice.
Not entirely sure that Hallstatt would be the best base for the entire area seeing as it is at the southern end of the Salzkammergut...also to get out of there you need to take the boat across the lake every time you are coming or going...Bad Ischl is well located in the centre of most of the lakes, has plenty of connections and also being a little bigger has more shops, bars, restaurants etc...
Or perhaps 2 nights in each of Hallstatt and Gmunden instead...

I would simply suggest Salzburg - easy train access to many places you are interested in!
Bad Ischl is indeed a good tip! Very romantic, maybe a bit more overpriced than smaller towns in the area, but I couldn't give you any inside info.
Hallstatt itself is somewhat quaint: the locals seem to be changed by the fact that they hardly ever see the sun (the town is on the shadow side of a pretty daunting face of rock)
As for the weather in Salzkammergut, many people have suggested to rename it Salzkammerschlecht ... :-[ but you may be lucky
gute Reise

Sehr lustig, Werner...I think I know exactly what you mean...))

Now that you mention it the 2 times I stayed in the Skagut I was absolutely drenched...thought it was just my bad luck...

Start in Salzburg, then move on to Gmunden, Bad Ischl (you can do both of the town within a day), Hallstatt (you can sleep in Obertraun, which is much cheaper) and finish your trip in Bad Aussee (in Styria). That yould be my suggestion. All the towns/villages are easily accessible by train.

We had a great 3 day stay a few weeks ago in Obertraun: hiking around the lake, seeing Hallstatt, swimming..... We could easily have spent longer just in that area -- there are hiking and bike routes everywhere, a glacier to go up, and if you got bored you could take the train 5 minutes to the next village and start over there. So I'd say head for some small town right on a lake and use that as your base, where you can just walk/bike right into the countryside -- no need to bother with Bad Ischl or Salzburg. It's gorgeous, you'll love it!
