Hi

I am going to Vienna for a weekend break in Feb, 3 nights and there does not seem to be too much information on going out in Vienna, just says Irish bars?

Does anyone know of great bars and good clubs in Vienna at the moment and nice restos for big lunch or early evening menus?

Also was thinking of going to an Opera/Motzart performance but do not want to sit there for 3 hours does anyone know if they do a sample one during the day or evening for just half hour or so, thanks

My friend Google came up with this, which might be of interest. I do not have any personal experience of it.

A CD from Mozart for 30 minutes is much less expensive as a ticket for the Opera and I am sure there is no opera worldwide who play whatever in less than two hours.

I'd recommend a show at the Marionette-Theater at Schoenbrunn Palace... book in advance. They go for about an hour.

Yeah I know but the Sydney Opera House does a show in the afternoons, its on for less than an hour it just gives tourists an idea of how the place sounds

quote: an idea of how the place sounds - you mean like those tribal dances that are sometimes performed in resort hotels, that are meant to give tourists an idea of how all these traditions look like? opera as an archaic rite of a passed empire?

fortunately, reiser, the composers guild foresaw the troubles extensive operas confront the audience with long ago and decided to split their works into acts, so the performances could be intermitted and the poor audience were granted a chance to rest, escape, take a piss or else - so just buy your ticket and (eventually) leave in the break. with a bit of luck, you can try to skip the first acts and just turn up for the last one, as the showdown is usually the most interesting bit of the opera (music, special-effects, encores). hell, you might even like it! alas, no Mozart scheduled for Feb, you may have to make do with Verdi or Strauss instead...

If you happen to like Jazz, Jazzland is excellent. Or it was the night I went there anyway.

and in addition to # dont forget that most of the time in the last act one of the actors/singer dies on stage. This is why very often they change the program as they cannot insure the same opera for all days.

OK don't think I will go to one on a weekend break, I might try the hour one, if anyone can recommend cool bars/pubs/clubs would be great and nice places to eat.

Thanks
