Hi all
I'm going to Vienna next month and I'll like to know if there are nice villages (like Hallstatt) near Vienna.
As we are staying 9 nights, I wonder if it's best to book a hotel only in Vienna or Vienna and another nice city, not very far, as the arrival and departure flight are from Vienna.
What do you think it's the best (cheap + easy) way to go to Bratislava, as we are 4 persons, bus, train or boat ?

I do recommend you to stay in Vienna - you can easily do some excursions to Baden or to the abbey of Klosterneuburg - a nice region is also the valley of Wachau (with Krems and Melk)
If you go to Bratislava the cheapest way is by bus. You can take the bus from the underground station U3 (Erdberg) - The ticket costs about 7 €

I'm still "cooking" what to see in Vienna and nearby places. The best (for us) is to rent a car but, the prices are not cheap ...
The tip for Bratislava was great. I've already checked www.postbus.at and www.slovaklines.sk and the prices are similar.
I like places near lakes, so I wonder if are there nice villages near Neusiedler See ?

There is a nice village on the lake called Rust. Great wine and there is a pool area, however there is not really a shoreline. If you would like a better beach party atmosphere, go to Podersdorf on the the otherside. Great windsurfing and camping.

In that case, you'd probably enjoy a day spent exploring the villages along the Danube in the Wachau Valley, as suggested by Isabella...as well as Krems and Melk, medieval Duernstein is a little like Hallstatt in atmosphere and Stein (adjacent to Krems) is like something from a historical period film set...

So, we will stay 8 days in Austria. We are thinking in the following:
- 5 days in Vienna
- 1 day in Bratislava
For the 2 remaining days, we want to rent a car and choose one from 2 options:
A - day 1: Klosterneuburg, Krems, Dürnstein, Spitz, Melk and Sankt Pölten path 1
A - day 2: Rust, Sopron (Hungary), Fertőd (Hungary) and Podersdorf am See path 2
B - day 1 and 2: Book a hotel near Bad Ischl (or so), in order to visit some lakes: Bräuhofweg, Hallstatt, Sankt Wolfgang, Sankt Gilgen and Gmunden path 3

5 days sounds like a lot of time in Vienna so if you get itchy feet after 3/4 of them, you might even get to see all the itineraries that you have suggested...Paths 1-3 are all good ideas...
My two cents - take out Bratislava and instead add Salzburg (and a day) to your path 3. Bratislava is an interesting day trip if you live in Vienna and need to do some Sunday shopping, but not much really to see. Salzburg, on the other hand, is classic. I agree with the above, you can do 4 days in Vienna, 1 day path 1, 1 day path 2 and 2 days path 3.

Thanks for your suggestions, they helped to make a decision. We booked 9 nights in Vienna, but we intend to rent a car for 3 days and make all the paths. The last one is bigger (650/700km) but we don't need to change hotel and we can rent a smaller car (cheaper) as we don't need to take luggage with us ...
We will probably go to Bratislava on Sunday as Vienna is "closed" or on the 15th because it's holiday in Austria (the same in Portugal).
