Pals,

Well, I guess that in very touristic destinations such as Salzburg over Christmas, locals tend to "sell" everything as worth-seeing attractions! And I dont blame them..

However, we will be travelling with our 1-yer-old baby and I'm afraid we can only go to the REAL attractions in Salzburg as well as the surroundings.

Grateful for any thoughts, DOs and DONTs.

(PS .. in salzburg for 19 to 26 dec)
(PS2 a car will be available)

Cheers,

Marina

As it will be winter many of the outdoor or more rural attractions will not be accessible, such as the bishop's water garden ar Hellbrunn (spelling?) palace, the ice caves by Werfen, or Hitler's Eagle's Nest. The boats should be running on the nearby scenic Koenigssee in Germany, and I think the salt mine will be open from either the German or Austrian side. There are numerous attractive churches in the old town in Salzburg (I'm sure that most visitors only see a small number of them), the small cementary in it by the hillside is attractive but maybe only in warmer months, and of course there is also the large fortress. What I really enjoy about Salzburg is the ambience in the old town, where I would definitely stay, and its proximity to both the German and Austrian Alps. Split a Salzburger Nockerl for dessert.

Definitely check out the Christmas market, the fortress and Mozart's birthplace. The fortress is ok even if the weather is relatively bad because you are almost constantly indoors.
