Read that the Westbahn railway service between Salzburg and Vienna is scenic but rather expensive. Are the tickets cheaper if booked in advance? Can this be done and paid via a foreign credit card online? Are there cheap tickets for weekend travel during August?

You can get cheaper tickets in advance, follow the links above, agree with Neckervd it is not anything special so if you are doing the journey just for scenery do not bother.

It is only scenic as the train goes through Salzburg and into Germany. But from Vienna to Salzburg it is rather uninteresting.
