Hi, I am planning a 5 day trip in Salzburg - Vienna area. I will fly into Munich and will take a rental car and will spend a day in Chiemsee area. I will then reach Salzburg One day in Salzburg and I will be off to Vienna for a day or two. I will then be driving back to Munich (I catch the return flight).

I request suggestions from you all on a scenic drive from Vienna to Munich (I would have already spent a day each in Salzburg and Chiemsee on my way to Vienna). I am more interested in places of natural beauty (and less in museums!). I have one full day to drive from Vienna to Munich - and can take as many stops as required.

Suggestions on good food and beer are also welcome !!!

PS: This is a family trip.

Many thanks

I've only ever done this by public transport but I would have thought one route to attempt would be north from Vienna, following the Danube, via Klosterneuburg, Krems-Stein and Durnstein to Melk...after Amstetten, you have the 2 pretty towns of Steyr and Wels...south from there to the Salzkammergut (Lake District) via Traunsee to Bad Ischl and then west past Wolfgangsee towards Salzburg...from here on through Berchtesgaden or Burghausen Fortress towards Munich...

However...if you don't wish to go near Salzburg again, the route of the Danube will take you all the way through Austria to Bavaria taking in places like Linz, Passau and Regensburg which are all worth seeing...
