Hello Austria Board.

Just a quick one hopefully.

Planning to fly out to Salzburg tomorrow. Having a few days in Austria, then heading down to Slovenia.

Places where I want to go in Austria in between Salzburg and Innsbruck (from where I will get the train to Bled in Slovenia) are :

  1. Werfen ice caves
  2. Krimml waterfall
  3. Grossglockner Road

I am currently trying to work out the best way to do this, and also how many nights I will need to spend and where.

I have in mind trying to stay in Zell Am See as a base to see 2 and 3 above, but am not sure if this is the best approach ?

I would be grateful for advisce on any points which you think are relevant to this iteinerary, including the following queries :

a) would i be able to go stright on from Werfen to Zell-am-see in the same day, or would i be better doing werfen as a day trip frmo either Zel-am-see or from salzburg ?

b) would I be able to go from Zel-am-see to krimmly waterfall, and then on to innsbruk in the same day, or would I be better doing the waterfall as a daytrip from either Zel-am-see or innsruck ?

c) would zel am see be the best base from which to see the grossglockner road ?

d) I am also thinking about doing a trip from salzburg to Koingsee in germany. Would I need a whole day for this, or could I combine it with another of the excursions which I described above

There's no real reason I can think of why you couldn't take in Werfen on your way from Salzburg to Zell am See...you could also visit the fortress in Werfen as well to make day out of it...obviously this would be the most economic in terms of transport and time as you can break your train journey at Werfen and thus save time back-tracking from Zell am See on another day...

It depends really on how you intend to spend that day...some of the choices you have are to walk to the lake (approx 45 mins) from Berchtesgaden; whether to take the boat around the lake, and, if you do, if you choose to stop off here and there like the walk to Obersee Lake or St Bartholomae's Church and hike or cable-car up nearby Mt Jenner...or combine it with a tour of Eagles Nest mountain lodge...

But if I understand your query correctly then you can't realistically combine it with one of your other purported trips mentioned above...

im going tomorrow now instead of today.

i think that i might just base myself in salzburg and hire a car for a day to do the waterfall and the famous road. might miss innsbruk out and go straight to bled from salzburg.

Probably a sound decision...if you're in Salzburg, Werfen and Zell am See then you'll have seen as much as Innsbruck has to offer...on your way to Bled are Bad Gastein, Klagenfurt and Lake Woerthersee if you're seeking any more diversions...
