Ok..Jack, tell me if this sounds feasible then...3 days in Prague, 3 in Vienna, 2 in salzburg?
Now I have one day left- (one goes in travel back to India)...what do you suggest for that...Bratislava or Innsbruk...?
or should I just extend a day in either of the places mentioned first?
also, some posts/blogs seem to suggest a visit to Cesky Krumlov from Prague...where is it closer from...Prague or Vienna?

3 days in Vienna is heaps (to me).
If you want to get to the mountains for a day, you could stay the extra in Salzburg n go up to a Halstatt/Wolfgangsee kinda place. that's cool mountains + beautiful lakes. somewhere an easy day (or even simple overnight) trip from Salzburg. from what i know, there's LOTS of options close by.

Looks good to me...after 2 days in Prague you could consider a day-trip to Kutna Hora perhaps on the 3rd day...

If you're absolutely determined to visit one of those 2 cities then go for Bratislava as Innsbruck is too far away on such a tight itinerary...

Well, you could extend Vienna by a day and use that extra day to go to Bratislava as a day-trip which is what a lot of people do after 3/4 days there...alternatively you could extend Salzburg to 3 days and spend one day in Berchtesgaden/Koenigsee area of scenic beauty and the other exploring the Salzkammergut as far as Hallstatt via St Wolfgang and Bad Ischl which is also very beautiful...the first day would be in the city itself, of course...

CK is closer to Prague but takes approx 5 hours return to get there which is a big chunk out of daylight hours in late October/November...given your route the best way would be to go there en-route from Salzburg to Prague and spend the night there...

But that's assuming you're flying back from Prague, of course, which you haven't indicated?...

Hey Jack...thanks for all the info. Am flying out of Vienna, so no, not going back to Prague.

In that case, you could perhaps head for Cesky Krumlov late on Day 3 and spend 2 nights there...this way you get most of the 3rd day in Prague and it takes approx 3 hours to get to CK...then you have the whole of the following day in lovely Krumlov...on Day 5 you could then transfer to Salzburg and also spend 2 nights there before heading to Vienna for the rest of the trip...

Certainly if this is your intended itnerary then direction Prague-Krumlov-Salzburg-Vienna is the way to go...

As for me its best to choose innsbruck rather than salzburg, i was there couple of weeks back. you can cut down one day in vienna if you arrange for site seeing by tour operators( but little expensive than going by own). Take the vienna card if you wanna travel on your own.very economical. Take the eurail pass for travelling inside austria.:)
