Would like to spend around 3 days in Wachau valley (between Krems & Melk) and wondering where is the best place to stay. Will rely on public transport. Interested in wine tastings, renting bicycles, hikes. Also easy access to restaurants. Thanks for any advice.

None of these places are exactly metropolises but I'd say Krems is your best bet as it's more substantial than Melk or Duernstein, with a better selection of places to eat and drink...there are 3 places to rent bikes that I came across (including the tourist office) and a decent restaurant in the Gozzoburg which has a friendly owner and some very amusing and hospitable locals...

For more excitement, you'd probably have to locate in St Poelten but that's farther out and presumably defeating the object of the exercise...

Thought I ask in this thread instead of starting a new one.
I'm planning on staying a week end july in a small town south of St Pölten basically just bicycling and taking it easy.
But if the weather is bad, what would be my other options.
Im planning on visiting Krems and Melk but any suggestions on any other must.visits.

Hello!
If the weather is bad there are several abbeys you can visit - for example Seitenstetten, Ardagger, Lilienfeld or Herzogenburg
Near the abbey of Ardagger you have also the "Perry Pear House" - very nice!
Another option would be to visit the renaissance Schallaburg Castle or the city of Haag!
Best regards
