Hi

I'm planning to travel to Vienna for two days on 26/27 Oct and realised that 26 Oct is Austria's National Holiday. Will all the attractions be closed for a day etc?

Will be spending a day in Salzburg before heading to Vienna. Any recommended places to stay in both places as well as attractions to see & places to eat?

Thanks

Cheers
Sue

No, attractions will be opened like every other day, but some of them (museums) will be crowed because of special activities on this day.

Most shops will be closed, but restaurants, ... will be opened as usual.

I disagree with #1. October 26 is a Monday and as you will find out when visiting Vienna, almost everything of interest to tourists is closed on EVERY Monday. Even many restaurants close. Since the Museums Quartier museums always close on Monday, I don't see any chance of them being open. If you are lucky Schoenbrun Palace will still be open as it is open on Mondays. I'm not sure what the holiday will mean for their hours. If all else fails you can consider going to the Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetery) and see the graves of Beethoven, Brahms, etc.

Again and again and again and again!

jman98 is posting this crap again and again and again and again! But it's still untrue :-)

Eg. Museumsquartier - all of the museums are opened on monday, in fact all except one are opened every day of the week - and the one is closed on tuesday.

In fact, according to jman98, the sun never comes up over Vienna on a Monday, the Danube stops flowing and there is the weekly 24 hour news/television/radio black-out...

So, in other words - you've guessed it - almost everything is open...

thanks for the clarifications. By the way, what's the weather like in late Oct in Vienna & Salzburg? I"ll be staying like 1 day in Salzburg & 2 days in Vienna before heading to Budapest.

I'm from Singapore (hot & sunny) throughout the yr ;-)

Weather at this time of the year is very unpredictable! It you're lucky you will have 15 to 20 degrees centigrade and nice sunny days. If you are unlucky it will be very rainy and cold (5 degrees is possible). I hope you will be lucky :-)

Hi Sue, My husband and went to Salzburg and Vienna very recently. We stayed at Hotel Hofwirt in Salzburg http://www.hofwirt.net/en/ . Great location, easy walk to city centre, clean, decent breakfast. At Vienna, we stayed at Mercure Westbahnhof which is very close to a subway/underground station and it took us less than 20 mins to reach the city centre (including walk to ungerground, an average wait of no more that 5 mins and a short ride). Clean hotel, excellent breakfast, so-so service, building looking a bit aged. If you want ideas on where to go and what to see within a short time, please read my trip report at http://suja-thoughts.spaces.live.com/

Cheers.
