Hi to everybody out there,
We've been looking for an apartment to live in Vienna, Austria. And to be honest compared to Australia and also the US it's quite a shock ... the costs involved just to move in let alone the rent are way over what we have seen around here! So therefore I was so hoping that there might be someone out there who knows of a 3 bedroom flat or even house in Vienna that would be available for short time rent ie. 1-2 years from about January or April next year for a lovely family of 4 - 2 adults and 2 children. We currently live in Australia, but I'm Austrian; my husband is setting up business in Vienna. And for my children it will be a great opportunity to hook up with all their relatives in Austria. And as for me I've got a lot of coffee houses to go to after 15 years away from this wonderful city.
Cheers, Renate

1 to 2 years is a "short time rent" to you? Interesting. That's not what we in the USA would call short time rent.

Although I generally do not recommend using it, this might be a good thing to use Craigslist for. I advise caution though as you should not do what most under 30 year olds do and just blindly assume that anyone who advertises on Craigslist must be completely honest and that fraud is just impossible on Craigslist. We have posts from time to time about Craigslist rip offs and the people who post are just absolutely stunned as they honestly thought that such things were impossible on Craigslist. You might be able to find someone there who is interested in renting to you, but again, please please please be careful and do not send large sums of cash via Western Union to people who you want to do business with on Craigslist.

Vienna is one of the most expensive cities to live in the German-speaking area of Germany and Austria. I am not surprised that you have trouble finding a place, the number of homeless people who are not addicts and who hold a regular job there is shocking.

Instead of looking at Craigslist I recommend that you check out the website of the Standard, see http://derstandard.at/

I would also like to point you to the option of commuting - you should find it much easier to find a house or flat within a 100 km radius around Wien than in Wien itself.

1 to 2 years is not a short-term lease- it's a regular lease. I wold recommend against using Craigs's list- there must be local real estate websites that are better and have a more comprehensive list. Unfortunately i don't know what these are in Austria, but every European country has them. Since you read German, you'll have access to the regular market like any Austrian.

You might find it expensive, but the Euro is currently very strong against the AUD and the USD- nothing that can be done about that. Austrians do it, so it can be done, but it's probably fair to say that families without a guaranteed high income do not live on the Opernring.

To live in fear is a life half lived.

Hi,
I suppose if your husband works in Vienna he must speak any german. Have a look into Google under "Mietwohnungen in Wien" on the first page down you have offers in all quarters of the city. If not you can try the followings:
www.derstandart.at / www.flohmarkt.at / www.wohnen.at / www.immodirekt.at / www.privatimmobilien.at or the city www.stadt-wien.at
and check out if the apartments are empty or have furniture in

I'm Viennese myself, and the above mentioned links are a great place to look for flats! Alternatively, try www.immobazar.at

I'd recommend renting a flat privately, if possible, as opposed to through an agent. I find them horrendously expensive, whereas here in NZ, where we live, they seem to be reasonably priced. As a rule of thumb, an agent will take up to three months' rent in letting fees!

if you can get a Falter magazine that would be great, on the online version the don't have the "inserate" (www.falter.at) but this offers are in general private and not through an agency.
then there is also the uni website.
it is depending on the district how much the rent is.
everything in side the guertel is more expensive. if you go on the other side of the danube it is cheaper and sometimes really nice and green.
i really like the 23th district.
