My Wife and I wish to find accommodation in Vienna, close to the main train station, but affordable ( budge) We are both in our 50's and it will be our first visit to Vienna
HELP!!

Hi Nicore,
Could you please specify which main train station you mean (Vienna has several) and how many € per night you want to spend at most? If you have any special musts concerning your room (private bathroom vs. shared facilities, breakfast included in the room rate etc.) please share that with us too.

I would not like to spend more than 50 euros per night. private bathroom will be important and we will be arriving from either Munich or Praque, I am not sure which train station but as central as possible. Thanks for your reply

I really think you have to make that budget AT LEAST per person.
Looked at www.hrs.com and found a single out of 165 hotels with private bath (on a day in october) that was below 50€ with bath and not 10s of kms from railwaystations.
Try some portals hotels.com booking.com or tripadvisor and see what (central) hotels costs - forgetting distance from railway station right now - and make up your mind if Wien is a city fo your budget.
Booking.com gave some 6 places out of 250 that fullfilled the price - most were out of town. Try to look at these:
Austria Trend Hotel Beim Theresianum
Wombats City Hostel Vienna - The Base
Wombats City Hostel Vienna - The Base
Definitely wouldn't be suitable for a married couple in their 50s...
Try www.hostelworld.com for a list of budget hotels...

I have stayed in the Wombat and it is a pretty fine place, but Firehazard Jack is right, it is maybe not what you are looking for.
A good place to have a look is www.booking.com. Last time I went to Vienna I have booked a special deal on www.travelxalps.com, it was a pretty neat hotel for 27,- the night with breakfast.
Vienna is not a huge city and in the inner districts you can move along easy using the subway.
Have good time there!
