Hi there!

We're going on holiday to Austria in July next year and am flying in and out of Vienna. We're going to hire a car and drive out to the Salzkammergut region where we hope to base ourselves in a self-catering cottage type place. I am looking for some recommendations of where the best places to stay might be. From my research I'm thinking we'll either stay in Hallstatt (Or around) or Werfen. We'll want to visit the Hohe Tauern National Park for the day, and want good links to Vienna; which area would be better?

Thanks

DD

Staying in Werfen would leave you out on the periphery of things regarding the Salzkammergut but well placed to visit the HTNP...however apart from the 2 big attractions, there isn't too much else in Werfen to detain you...Hallstatt would be a good choice or Bad Ischl if you want somewhere a little bigger and livelier...but it kinda depends on how many days you have and if you have been to Salzburg before which would probably be ideal for you for both destinations...

would base myself in the town of Bad Ischl,
http://www.badischl.com/ (Town of Bad Ischl)
it was the summer residence of the emperor. because it is a very centrally located place in the Salzkammergut Lake District. Bad Ischl is one of the larger places in the area with a lot of amenties, sights and infrastructure. In Bad Ischl you also find cafes serving great desserts.
From there you can reach all important villages and towns without changing the means of transport (except ferry services). Ex Bad Ischl there is a direct bus to Salzburg as well as to St. Wolfgang and trains running both in Northerly and Southerly direction. Hallstatt/Obertraun are South of Bad Ischl and Ebensee/Gmunden are North of Bad Ischl.

This isn't a self-catering place, but the Seepension Hemetsberger (www.seepension.at/) in the town of Mondsee has been a great basecamp for me and my son in our explorations of the Salzkammergut. It's located right on the lake; in fact the family that owns it builds boats and the boatyard is located under the pension. The "basement" of the place is a watery garage! The family is super nice and it's located right next to the Alpenseebad, a great beach/swimming area with water park, great slides for kids (and grownups) and other fun stuff. Easy access by car and bus to the rest of the region. There's also a limnological institute just a few meters up the road, where scientists from around the world are studying the ecology of the Salzkammergut lakes and alpine lake ecology in general. I don't know that it's open to the public on a regular basis, but if they're having an open house it's worth stopping in.

Hey,
did you think about "Gmunden"? It's a little bigger than Bad Ischl and Hallstadt, lies nicely on a lake, sourounded by Mountains. Highway is not too far.
Enjoy your trip!

I can highly suggest Haus im Wiesengrund in Obertraun close to Hallstatt. It's always a pleasure staying there, nice surroundings, a quiet place and lovely landlords, just call Mr. Binder (+43 6131 442), although he's quite old he speaks English reasonably or write an email.
Don't book over tiscover, I think you'll be charged extra.
