| susan7621:04 UTC05 Sep 2007 | Hi
I am fairly new to London (originally from Australia) can anyone tell me where to buy (as cheaply as possible)
Mushroom in Butter sauce (in Australia this is normally in the tinned vege section) have looked at Sainsbury, M & S are there any other suggestions?
A whistle?
A plastic raincoat you know the type you can fold up and put in a handbag? (How much approx are they)
A set top box. I am staying where there are only 4 channels. I have been told that I can buy a box for about £20 that allows me to access another 40 channels for free. Is that right? I was told there are no additional costs and they are compatible with all tvs... can someone give me some more info, where to buy etc
Thanks everyone

There's more info on freeview here.

You can get a mac in a pack raincoat thing out of any outdoor shops (like Millets or Tiso) I think they are under£20
For the set top box thing - i think you are looking for a freeview box, i think you might be able to get them in any shop that sells tv's. Possibly you can get them in supermarkets? I might be wrong though. Once you have bought the box you don't need to pay anything else, you just hook it up to your TV.

Try Lilywhites for a whistle, maybe also Decathon
Go Argos for your plastic pncho or amazon sell a variety of rain coats
Currys for a Set Top Box-Freeview Box
Cheers

| euro-traveller22:12 UTC05 Sep 2007 | You need a good outdoor aerial to get a decent recepion of Freeview digital channels. If you only have an indoor aerial, usually the signal wont be strong enough for set-top box. Even with an outdoor aerial (i.e. your TV set is connected to a wall socket with a cable), if your current reception (analogue) isn't very good, again you get poor picture (broken up) or a frozen screen. Before you buy a set-top box, even for £20, borrow someone else's to test it will work. Also you get a better picture by using a Scart connection between TV and set-top box, which is a thick cable with large metal connectors.

| lisamnz16:38 UTC06 Sep 2007 | Susan if you do decide to get a freeview box, have a look on freecycle (it's a yahoo group) as there are often people looking to give away old ones.
If you've only got 4 channels where you are, it sounds like you might have poor reception already bx most tvs will get 5?
whistles and plastic raincoats can be cheaply bought from those £2 stores and general junk stores that seem to be absolutely everywhere in London. Just ask in a few, you'll find them without too much effort I'm sure.

| susan7621:48 UTC06 Sep 2007 | Thanks everyone ... really appreciate the help, its quite confusing getting used to all the different shops here.
And thank you to Euro-traveller and LisaMNZ good to know... coz I do only have an ariel on top of my tv.. oh and I made a mistake .. actually I do get 5 and it is good quality pictures... so should I be ok.. with that.
I dont know anyone who has a freeview box, but will see what I can do and will definitely check out freecycle..
Thanks again

| greencelery21:58 UTC06 Sep 2007 | Mountain Warehouse in Covent Garden is good for very cheap outdoor clothes, including foldaway raincoats- about £10-£20.
While you're in Covent Garden, there is an Australia Shop there that sells imported foods to Australians for about 10,000 times as much as they should cost.

| scaryant04:17 UTC07 Sep 2007 | #7 (and Susan) Prices for Aussie food are probably better priced through Sanza. I've used them a couple of times and they're very reliable and prices are pretty good also!

| sazzleblonde198511:10 UTC11 Sep 2007 | FIND a pound shop for your raincoat! or if your want an expensive one- millets camping shop! A whistle? the pound shop again! haha. | alanr15:02 UTC11 Sep 2007 |
Quote
Possibly you can get them in supermarkets?

£10 for a Freeview box in Tesco's - Asda have them around the £20 mark, You can get one with a card for Setanta sports for about £50-£60
Most require a Scart connection between box & TV so if you don't have a Scart socket on your TV you'll have to pay around £70 for one that has a built in modulator so you can plug it into your aerial socket
And just because you get lousy reception on normal TV doesn't mean you'll get lousy digital reception
