What is better in England ?

Hi,

Everybody was telling me :
"you will not recognize England","it has changed so much","its a modern country now","its a very rich country now"

So What is Better in England now than 10,20 or 30 years ago ?

Thank you

Personally I think one of the beauties and the curses of England is that it hasn't actually changed radically over the last 2-3 decades. The country is both dragged down by the inconveniences of its historic infrastructure (transport, utilities, urban planning) and fantastic for it (the quintessential villages, the pubs, the sense of history). Our changes are not unique to England but obviously include multicultural communities and ethnic diversity, new technologies, decline of the high street, decline and closure of heavy industries.
What is better for England today?...not much but thats because its always been a rather fine place to be...

Beer has improved so much in the time scale you are thinking about. Huge range of small breweries producing excellent beers from the standard bitter to some real weird ones(Rhubarb flavour anyone?) I;ll think of some more profound changes/improvements but you can see where my priorities lie.

The variety and availability of good food has greatly improved, both ingredients for cooking for yourself, and the quality of catering in restaurants etc. The coffee is a lot better too. You can have an alcoholic drink in a cafe where you want to, not just drinking dens and posh restaurants. Cigarette smoke is no longer imposed on you in public buildings. The quality of tourist infrastructure has greatly improved - visitor centres, walking trails, etc. A great many urban areas have been tidied up and are now a pleasure to visit. Many nice parks have been provided, with great play activities for children. And a lot of great things to do book out and have to be booked ahead. The availability of information is extraordinary. The cost of this is that low-cost options have withered away in some cases. Some of the quiet secrets I knew have become well-known crowded places.

Now all we need to do is tow the country a few degrees to the south, to make it a bit warmer, and build a taller range of mountains to the west to keep the worst of the winds out.

I'm with #2.

In terms of London I think the tube has improved alot, I think the mainline railway stations are undergoing a rebirth - look at places like St Pancras and King's Cross and smaller stations ranging from say Balham, Streatham Hill and Smitham to Clapham Junction (I call CJ smaller because it is not a terminus and doesn't have the grand hall of terminuses or a tube stop; I recognise it is one of the busiest stations in the UK).

Compared to 20 years ago there is a plague of coffee shops; they grow like barnacles on the underside of a badly maintained Philippines registered supertanker.

Food, local transport.

It is much cheaper than 15 years ago at least for me :-)

But it is due to a better conversion rate of Czech crown to pound. Nevertheless it remains expensive for an average Czech as for prices of some food, restaurants, accommodation....

6

Horse meat is becoming more popular.

7

Beer range has improved.
Non-smoking pubs = bliss.
Pedestrianisation of some places make towns more welcoming

8

Pub food - you can eat decent food pretty cheaply almost anywhere all day
Supermarkets open 24x7

With respect to all comments this is also a real effect about England.
Today's adults are so unhealthy they are 15 years 'older' than their parents and grandparents at the same age, researchers say.
They are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity than previous generations because of poor health, according to a study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.
Looking at 6,000 adults aged 20, 30, 40, 50 over a 25 year period, researchers found younger generations had poorer 'metabolic' health - a range of issues including blood pressure and weight.
