Traveling by caravan

My husband and I will be traveling in UK 9/8-9/30 and traveling in a caravan which we are hiring near London. We've seen U.K. highlights such as London, Stonehenge, Shakespeare country, Salisbury, and Portsmouth so don't really need to do them again. Wondering how difficult finding camping parks might be and what should we be sure to see on our way to Scotland. Also, is ferry service better to Ireland from Scotland or England?

I presume you mean campervan, a caravan is something you tow. It depends on where you want to go in Ireland I suppose. From Holyhead in Wales you can go to Dublin, Scotland has other options. There is loads of options of things to see on your way to Scotland if that is the root you take. I suggest a guide book and see if places interest you. Campsites shouldn't be too much of issue. Please bear in mind there are some very narrow roads in Ireland.

Have you checked what the availability of campervans with automatic gearboxes is like?

Campervans not my scene, but ......
1. Google for campervan sites
2. If heading towards Scotland where are you hiring the van from? - just because if it is south of London make sure you drive round the city (use the infamous M25 motorway) and not try and drive through London
3. Ferries to Ireland are expensive. The usual advice on Thorntree for people in hire cars is that it is cheaper to leave the hire car here and pick up another after the ferry crossing. With a campervan it might not be so easy, but you might be surprised at the cost - and with only 3 weeks here there's more than enough to fill your time going to Scotland and back. Main ferries to Ireland from Fishguard South Wales, Holyhead North Wales, and Stranraer in southern Scotland

Don't some vehicle hire companies not allow you to take it out of the UK?

Some probably do but after driving around Ireland last week i got stuck behind a few hired UK campervans.
