It's shit.

I really like the system, but if you ever try to install new maps then it is a nightmare. They have used some poxy propritary program so they can use their equally poxily implimented DRM and it just f%@!s up every single time.

Instead of this total mess, they could have had it so (i) it's easy to buy a mail out SD card with the map on it already or (ii) you can just copy the map onto the SD card with a card reader as a direct copy.

I've spent the last 3 hours trying to install a USA map.

How hard can it be TomTom? Isn't mapping what you are supposed to do?

Don't be silly, Tomtom are there to take your money! Try to buy Australian maps from their website. They dont sell them at the moment due to a 'website error' for the last few weeks.

I finally sorted it out, no thanks to the idiots who wrote the manual.

Problem no 1 is that you have to use the poxy propriatory program to do the download, rather than a regular download or a download manager program. Now the USA map is about 1GB, so the slightest mess-up in a several hour long download even at broadband speed and....

Problem no 2 is the manual. It doesn't tell you you need to use a card reader, not the TomTom unit to install the map on the card.

Problem no 3 is that when you try to install the map by plugging the TomTom into the computer, as you think you would do because they don't tell you you have to use a card reader, it f*!&Qs up everything already on the card. The card, with the TomTom software and any maps you already had on it, is totally trashed.

If you happened to not back up the card before you started, you would be totally screwed.

Fortunately I did back up the card before I started so other than a lost 4 hours while I worked out what was going wrong I came out ok and was able to install the new map plus reload the trashed software and existing map. But big thumbs down to TomTom.
