Hi Everyone!!
I am coming over to England in June for a months holiday and wanted to spend a bit of time in the North Country for a change from London.
Just wanted to ask if anyone knows of any good, "cheap-ish" accommodation in The Lake District....I would be open to a B&B and or I have also heard that there are some good camping facilities around the place?? I will be travelling up from Liverpool, and will not have a car, so I guess I will need to stay somewhere accessible by bus or train. My aim was to get back to nature..so if anyone knows of some quiet spots along a lake....or on a farm....I would be very interested to know!!
Also..I am purchasing an 8-day Britain Flexi Rail Pass to get around the country, which can be used on most rail networks apart from the Underground in London. I just wondered if anyone knows what the protocol is....i.e...when I decide to move on to my next destination, will I have to pre-book a seat on the train, or do I just show up and hope for the best??
Many thanks!!
Melissa

Youth hostels in the Lake District are generally very good (and offer decent quality meals at a low cost) and the one in Ambleside is right on the shore of Lake Windermere. They also have a shuttle bus which goes between several of the hostels and the train station. As for camping I can recommend the National Trust one in Wasdale which is in a great position for hiking off into the mountains. Another very good campsite is Castlerigg farm just outside of Keswick. Avoid Low Wray campsite - very noisy.
With the trains i would try and book a seat for longer distance journeys particularly if travelling on a Friday or at peak times. For shorter journeys you will be okay just to show up.
Have a great trip.

The only rail station in the Lake District is Windermere. It's OK here but quite busy and commercialized. You could go to Penrith by train and from there you can get a short bus ride to Keswick. This is my favourite place in the entire world. The valley across the lake from Keswick is stunning. There are lots of B&Bs here and many campsites. This really is one of the world's special places - just avoid bank holiday weekends - first monday in May, first monday in June last monday in august. If you get here onone of these you won't get a seat on the train or a place to stay or be able to move when you get here!
