Taxis Gatwick

Country forums / UK & Ireland / England

So,I have arrived in Gatwick after a 'not so smooth' flight! I would have take the Gatwick Express to head to the centre of the city BUT this time I had two very heavy luggages...which makes mobility a bit restricted! Especially around trains and tube stations! Is taxi the only option I have or does anybody else have any better ideas?I ended up paying almost a hundred quid:-(

But,what would you have done if you were knackered after a long haul flight, blessed with two heavy luggages?(Yes,I wanted to travel light but this time it wasn't possible!)
Thank you!

Well there's not a lot you CAN do if you've got tons of luggage...if you know when you're arriving pre-book a taxi. That way they'll be waiting for you (even if you're flight is delayed) and it will cost a bit less, around £50-60 pounds depending which part of town you're going to.

If you are allowed to take it on the 'plane, then it can't be too much to carry on to the train. And there is also a skycap service (I think: certainly at Heathrow) so that you can have your bags carried for you until you leave the airport.

#2 yes it can. Excess baggage is one reason. Another is other countries may technically have the limits but not necessarily use them. Finally, the OP may not be physically able to carry heavy luggage any distance.

For the trips I did with full baggage allowance and sometimes excess- ( I was moving overseas ) I could not have physically carried the suitcases and the hand luggage any distance on my own. I certainly couldn't have managed the underground with ease.

Normally on holiday, the max I take is 10kilos and no laptop (which is a killer to walk around with)

I had a pre booked van thing from Gatwick a couple of days ago and as #1 says, it was £55. Pretty good seeing as there were 5 of us, so plenty of room for your stuff. They will help you get your bags to the car too...

Nor sure what the problem is as there is a lift down to Gatwick Express platforms 1&2 at Gatwick from within the ticketing area.

At the other end ask for assistance from a porter to take luggage up to taxi area and go from there.

Would travel 1st class on the GEX if doing it at peak time as always less people there and more room and more importantly from lift to train is only a couple of feet.

Thanks for all your posts!

#3- you really understood my situation! Way too many luggages, throw in the handbags along! It is not possible to drag them on the tube stations-I will create a perpetual traffic underground!? I was heading towards Wembley from Gatwick...long way i know!

Maybe I should have told the pilot to drop me off at Heathrow;-)

Going from Gatwick to Wembley you don't need the tube. There's a through train service once an hour. One station (Gatwick) to get into, another (Wembley Central) to get out of and a taxi from there to your final destination.

Ahhh #7 I wish I'd contacted you earlier.....!Oh well, you learn from your mistakes!
