Scotland - villages, towns, and cities

Country forums / UK & Ireland / Scotland

Does anyone know how many villages, towns, and cities are in England? How many abandoned villages are in England?

  • in Scotland, not in England.

1

I wonder why only in Britian and not Ireland?

Nobody knows

Different people will give you different answers - probably all correct in their own terms

My random number generator says 5328

I don't think there is a definition of village or town (when does a bunch of houses become a village, when do more houses become a town). There is a legal definition of city (what has been given the title city) but they need not necessarily be big places.

#4 is correct. For example, the city of St Davids in Wales has a population of under 2,000 whilst the village of Chalfont St Peter in Bucks has a population of over 10,000.

I think we would tend to use the phrase "deserted villages" rather than abandoned. I'm not sure of the figures. I can think of several.

So we aren't talking about palces like Tyneham, right?
