I'm thinking of moving to the Leyton/Leytonstone/Stratford area.

It seems that Leytonstone is generally a bit safer that Leyton (which is important as I may be walking home alone later in the evening). Anyone who lives in, or has recently lived in these areas, I'd be grateful for your comments on the area, especially in terms of safety.

In particular, I was wondering what the bottom end of Leytonstone High Road (between Cann Hall Road and Stratford tube station) is like - I've heard that there can be some, shall we say, unsavoury characters around there after dark?!

Thanks

The south end of Leytonstone is much more rundown than the Northern end. The closer towards Wanstead you get the nicer the area. However I have walked home many times through this part of Leytonstone (the Stratford end) after dark and never once had any trouble. There are 1 or 2 good pubs in the area, notably the Birkbeck and a newish Music pub called the Loaded Dog on Leytonstone High Road. Leytons much more of a dump in my opinion as #1 says.

My only experience of getting mugged in Stratford is exactly the opposite of #1, the guy smashed a blunt object over me from behind for no reason that I'm aware of, left me with a split skull, but didn't bother even going through my pockets.

I would choose Leytonstone if I was buying a place in any of those areas. I've worked there for 15 years and lived not far away all my life so I know them inside out. O'neills is a nice friendly pub and theres a 24 hour grocery shop and a nice Indian on Church lane. BTW yorkie, if it wasn't a mugging you probebly bumped someones shopping trolly in Tescos.
