My husband has a meeting in Edinburgh, and two of my adult daughters will be visiting us while we are there. What are some of the less touristy things to do there? Do we need to rent a car? Any restaurants you'd recommend for foodies? Thank you!

Edinburgh's a good city to walk around and there's also the tram system too now. Not driven in or around Edinburgh for about fifteen years now as recent visits have usually involved catching a train up the East Coast mainline or to and from Glasgow.
Good rail connections to Glasgow for a change of city (personally prefer Glasgow to Edinburgh).
Lonely Planet do a Pocket Edinburgh guide (see Shop at top right of page) which may provide further ideas of things to do, places to see and eateries too.
We're not foodies, but it may be worth looking at The List magazine website as they've got a good restaurant guide for both Edinburgh and Glasgow and a fairly good What's On section.
If you're in Edinburgh over the last weekend of May then there's also the Edinburgh Marathon going on.
