help w itinerary scotland and london

Country forums / UK & Ireland

hello

my husband and i are planning a trip and cannot decide between these two options

1 - traveling to scotland
2 - traveling to scotland and then train to london

option 1 we would fly into glasgow, travel to the highlands and then finish our journey in edinbrugh
option 2 - we could fly into edinbrugh, take a day trip or two to the highlands and then make our way to london for 3-4 days.

would option 2 be too rushed? should we just maximize our time to explore one country??

We don't like to travel place to place to place and pack and unpack. Any advice is much appreciated!

Thank you
J

It is difficult to say if something is 'too rushed' or not if you don't include any timeframe....

1

How long is your trip?

What are your expectations?

Why do you want to go to London?

2

We will only have 7 full days due to travel time.

Going to Scotland alone allows us to travel and stay somwhere in the highlands. If we were to do London, we would do day trips to see the highlands.

London is London. Great city to see a lot of things museums etc. to change he pace but know I would be back there again in the future.

I am having a very difficult time deciding what to do. Help!

With that short a timeframe,I'd stay in Scotland...

4

Day trips from Edinburgh ( note the spelling) won't get you into the real Highlands. Going to London is a waste of a day. Stick to Scotland.

5

What do you think is a good base for the Highlands pedro?

Is there anywhere you can stay at and do day trips easily by public transport up there?

6

When are you planning on visiting?

Edinburgh during the course of Edinburgh Festival could be problematical, especially when it come to finding accomodation...

Studying a map of the Highlands, there are only two places which are 'centre of communications', Fort William and Inverness. Both have train lines and bus routes going out in many directions. As places themselves, neither are the greatest, but I prefer Inverness, less chance of rain, being more easterly, and more to do in the city. Day trips from either I would not describe as easy, schedules are not that frequent. You also have greater opportunity to go on bus tours from Inverness, including the Orkneys in a day if you must.

Last week of April coming up fast!

If we split with London, we woukd base ourselves in Edinburgh and then 1-2 rabbies tours from there to see other places, Inverness, Glencoe, Stirling, Loch etc before train to London.

If we stay the entire week I would like to stay somewhere beautiful then make our way to Edinburgh

Is 3-4 days in Scotland and 3-4 London enough? Or should we forget about London all together

Thank you for all the help!

If we stay in Scotland, does it matter where we fly to? I was thinking maybe fly into Glasgow and leave from Edinburgh.

Do you have recommendations as to where we should visit from Glasgow?? Would like to see the most beautiful places, hike if weather permits, maybe horseback ride, get right into the culture and eat amazing food! I am sure if we feel comfortable driving on the other side of the road by sounds kind of fun!

Open to ideas
Thanks to you all
