Funds transfers between different banks can take 24 hrs to a number of days to clear, I don't think that's an option really - unless the bank can guarantee the funds transfer will be immediate.

Many people take out travel insurance for just this very occasion. The insurance company stump up emergency cash while all the faffing around gets sorted. Also, credit card companies will do this too.

Has she asked the police? They can work around this sort of situation. Also, they can issue a warrant for transport (generally rail) to get her home: obviously she would eventually have to pay.

Yes you are correct it is walking disaster woman (in fact I think she's actually been called that before), but not quite the same one. What we have here is the English version really.
It's some consolation to me that she's quite relaxed about everything today. Somehow she's gotten her mobile working and I have just received a text letting me know she's by a waterfall and a finch has just landed on her plate :)
Thanks all, I think we've found the best solution--- she's changed her train ticket (a small charge plus change in value of the ticket) and will come back tomorrow. I really thought it would be easier but there you go.
