Hey there,

I have an english person stuck near Inverness in Scotland and all of her ID and most of her cash have been stolen. What can i do to get her cash? I even rang her bank and they told me over the phone that you need at least SOME identification to get money out of your account. (In Australia, where I'm from, a signature is sufficient, but it takes a few min longer).

Western Union requires ID as well.

Any help appreciated,
Bc

I'd be contacting the UK Passport Office to get a new passport (assuming she's lost that as well). Alternatively if she has family who are holding her passport for her, get them to courier the passport ASAP to her in Inverness. You can get a overnight delivery...

If she has (had) a driver's licence she could also contact the DVLA and request a renewal, but this might take a couple of weeks to get. Best to call them and ask though, you may be able to go to a DVLA in Inverness and have a new one issued on the spot.

Thanks heaps for all that. Good options there, but nothing that will help her today unfortunately (she didn't take her passport on the trip thankfully/unthankfully?) Luckily she has enough not to have to sleep on the street!

I was hoping for something more immediate than that, but if that's our only option then a courier will have to do. Seems incredible that there's no way of getting someone immediate emergency cash in the UK. What do you do if you're foreign? Beg your way to the nearest embassy? ;)

Yeh, banks are unfortunately or fortunately very anal in the UK, no thanks to all the identity theft and terrorists around the world. Without any "proof of residency" on her it will be very difficult to get any assistance or renewal of ID from anyone.

If found this Next Day ID site which may help, but I think it'd be just as fast to have the passport couriered to Inverness.

Cheers

Does she know anybody up there that you could Western Union the money to? Somebody with ID?

Thanks for all the help again. 4, that's an excellent idea. She doesn't know anyone, but maybe she could find someone willing to help...

Ring someone she knows in England, get them to transfer some money into your account, take it out and give it to her.

If she's lost her bank cards, she needs to be speaking to her bank to cancel them, of course.

Thanks 6, but I'm in Stirling unfortunately... Well, to be exact, I'm at work in Glasgow, but we live in Stirling. This is one reason why the overnight courier could be difficult unless I quit work early and get home to find and post that passport.

The logistics of all this are hurting my brain. Maybe I should just get off work, drive up and grab her :) Not a bad option really...

Assumming she has made a police report they will have the detail and can vouch for her story with the bank.

In addition get whoever is holding her passport to go into the nearest branch of the bank she is looking to draw money from. They can readily take a copy and that person can pay in money that can be accessed. Bank may be a bit obnoxious but they have no reason to be, ask to speak to the manager or someone senior to prevent getting screwed with any charges.

Walk into a branch of your bank and indicate you wish to let someone in Inverness have money from same bank there as they have been robbed. Easy to verify as agree something in advance regarding verification so it can be passed along.
