I’ve found various opinions on this, but I’d appreciate a fresh take.
We arrive Thursday evening around 21:00 to LHR Terminal 5. We depart out of Terminal 3 at 08:30. I believe our luggage will be checked all the way through and we will not have to collect it. We have booked a room at the Hilton Garden Inn. We are traveling with a young child and looking for the most convenient, fastest, and cost effective way (best balance) to get from Terminal 5 to the hotel in the evening and from the hotel to Terminal 3 in the morning.

Also, if our flight is at 08:30 and our luggage is checked already, how early do we realistically need to get back to the airport?

Thanks.

The information on getting to the hotel from the airport is very clear and concise on the hotel website. You don't say where your morning flight is too, but knowing Heathrow I would want at least an hour wherever, you will just go straight to security but this can take quite a while, obviously long haul boards earlier than short haul, so you would want to be even earlier.

Thanks.
Maybe I'm just slow, but the hotel's website isn't clear to me. From Terminal 5 to the Hatton Cross I understand that the tube is 4.50 GBP per person. The Hoppa bus is also 4.50 GBP per person. That's 9.00 GBP (assuming a 6-year old is free on both?). Plus, both require finding/waiting for them. About how much would a taxi be and how long would it take? If it would be like 10.00 GBP and take less time door-to-door, then it is probably a better option. Same thing with the morning return to Terminal 3.

I understand there are free buses too. But I don't quite understand where to get them and what their schedules are.

FYI - we are flying to the USA so maybe we need more time for security in the morning?

The tube is much better than the bus, it is easy to find well signed and runs frequently, a taxi would be more than £10 I would think and probably slower than the tube. For the next day I would probably want to be there 90 minutes in advance especially with a small child. The time of year can make a difference also, in the height of summer security queues get longer.

Heathrow has a Freeflow fare zone, the buses are free within it and it extends from Terminal 5 to Hatton Cross, you could take the 490 or 482 buses from Bus stop 8 at Terminal 5 to Hatton Cross, just tell the driver that you are getting off at Hatton Cross because you have to pay if you are going beyond Hatton Cross. The map shows you exactly where is Bus stop 8 http://content.tfl.gov.uk/bus-route-maps/heathrow-t5.pdf
In the morning you could take the 285 or X26 buses from Bus stop E at Hatton Cross to Heathrow Central Bus Station for Terminals 1,2,3 the map shows exactly where is Bus stop E http://content.tfl.gov.uk/bus-route-maps/hatton-cross-a4.pdf and this map shows the Freeflow fare zone to Terminal 1,2,3 http://content.tfl.gov.uk/bus-route-maps/heathrow.pdf
In case you are wondering each bus stop has a red metal circle with the Bus stop number/letter on the top of its post.
You can use the Heathrow Express trains for free to transfer between terminals (Terminal 4 is closest to Hatton Cross) and if you have an Oyster or contactless credit/debit card the fare is free between terminals but from Terminal 5 to Hatton Cross or Hatton Cross to Terminal 1-2-3 it is 1.70 peak or 1.50 off-peak or 4.90 cash.

Tube to Hatton Cross is a rip off. Bearing in mind you can go from Central to T4 via Hatton Cross for free on the tube. Bearing in mind there is three of you it might be worth while using the equally rip off Hotel Hoppa bus is a rip off. As stated go to the ground level and walk out you will see where the buses pick up. There are two buses that go via Hatton Cross as mentioned. They drop into the cargo centre and T4 first. No real point in catching the free Heathrow Express to Central then the free connection to T4. Just get the free bus all the way. The taxis hate doing short journeys so unless you are prepared for a mouth full of abuse don't even think of a taxi for such a short journey.

So alex2306, in your opinion there is no good way then, right?!

I think that I said the public bus .
"As stated go to the ground level and walk out you will see where the buses pick up. There are two buses that go via Hatton Cross as mentioned. They drop into the cargo centre and T4 first."
So what is wrong with what I said
Public bus is free. Does require a walk at the end but is only a couple of hundred yards.
Tube is expensive. Still requires a walk at the end.
Heathrow Express. Free but still requires the same fee bus that you would have caught at T5 from T4 to Hatton Cross. Requires a walk at the end.
Hoppa bus. Door to door but relatively expensive.
Taxi. Door to door, mind numbingly expensive, comes with a mouth full of abuse from those wonderful black cab drives.
Pre booked taxi or Uber. Door to door but relatively expensive. Comes without the abuse.

Marka 55 didn't mention (or me) the 423 bus. This is also in the free bus zone and goes to Hatton Cross but goes around the north side of the airport so will take longer but this bus stops almost next to the Hilton Garden hotel. Just a few yards walk. May be the best option given the op has luggage and a small child. Get the 285 opposite side of the road back to T3. Also the 555 but there are less frequent.
