GPS ?

Country forums / UK & Ireland / England

I'm wondering if anyone knows - if I bring my Canadian Magellan GPS with me will it work in the UK?

Of course. Provided you're preferably outside and preferably don't have any tall obstructions near you.

You might wanna download a detailed map for the UK though.

You'll need to select the appropriate grid - British National Grid - unless you stick with latitude & longitude.

If you're planning on using GPS for hill walking, then have a look here :http://www.mountain.rescue.org.uk/mountain-advice

Remember to carry spare batteries at all times.

Yes, but what the others have said - you have to download the appropriate maps beforehand. That might not be the technical term, but when we used our GPS in mainland Europe we had to get the maps first - same with our GPS in our boat.

a GPS receiver doesn't need a map downloaded. A satnav does.

a GPS is simply a receiver that gives you position from the satellites.

what do you have, OP?

I have a Magellan but I think with a UK download I should be sorted :)
I'm not actually sure what an OP is?

OP = original poster= person that started the thread = you. :-)

I don't know what a Magellan is...

Thanks neverwinter. I guess we have a satnav....

I suppose a Magellan is a type of satnav/GPS.

Yes - I was using the wrong terms - I have a Sat/Nav by a company names Magellan I recognise now that what I have to do is purchase a European download so that I can access directions - it's $100 CND which is a a bit of a kick but I don't think I have a choice - I could purchase a sat/nav there but I wouldn't be saving anything - anyways thanks for the help...

Alternatively you could just hire one whilst you're over here.
