I'm so sorry about your loss - just read this on the Western Europe board. I hadn't visited in quite a while either - was looking for info for a friend. Ben was a kind and helpful man, with whom I've had many good exchanges over the years.

I wouldn't worry too much about the odd nutter, Mozzy, there will be enough friends and admirers to bounce any such importune guests, just as at any memorial. If I were in London, I'd certainly attend.

I never met Mr Haines, but it seems I've had correspondence with him for ten years or so - has this board been up that long? It was certainly one of the first ones I ever read and posted on. And Ben Haines always provided useful and detailed advice, and did much to improve the tone and courtesy of the board.

Ben Haines was one of the most generous travelers I had the pleasure to "cyber-know"
You will find a small memorial to him here: http://fodorite.fisherfowler.net/

My condolences. If its any comfort, your uncle was greatly admired.

Here is a lovely travel account - in place and time - by Ben Haines:

He told me about his church congregation (we were discussing multiculturalism and immigration in cities) and it sounds on the mark: http://www.southwark.anglican.org/bridge/0003/page07.htm<BR><BR>http://www.brama.com/travel/messages/6111.html How could I forget Ben Haines?
