My uncle, Ben Haines, a regular poster on the thorn tree, died on 27 Mar 07. There will be a memorial service for him in around 3 weeks time in London to which all are welcome. For further details, please email me on timhaines@hotmail.com.
Haven't seen Ben around on this branch much lately, although I understand he was regularly posting helpful information, as always, to travellers on the Eastern Europe Branch.
Ben was always very helpful, and his passing is a great loss to all who come here looking for help.

Oh my god - he's been around for 1000 years.. one of the first posts I ever read was by him. What happened?

Very sorry to hear about the death of Ben Haines. When I was a regular visitor to this site a few years ago I often saw his posts and admired him for making the effort to give considered, informative advice. The high standard of his replies inspired me to make a similar effort on the (few) occasions I’ve posted here and he will continue to be my inspiration. A great loss.

Sorry to hear, but why would you advertise anyone to join the memorial, any nutter could turn up..............although people replied to his posts and vise versa, they didn`t really know him.
My gran died recently but i will not be welcoming total strangers who never met her to her memorial!
Memorials are a personal matter in my eyes.
Respect to him though......................i am sure he will be missed by those who knew him well!

As long as I have read TT I have admired Ben Haines´ answers, usually on the Eastern Europe branch. His detailed information and always patient and encouraging answers even to some – to put it nicely – very infantile questions. He sounded very, very sympatethic. It is a loss.

I didn't know Mr Haines from Thorntree, which I joined only recently, but from the forums at fodors.com
as well as at travelerstogo.com where he is also being remembered fondly today.
Mr Haines always posted as Ben Haines as far as I know. He was a Londoner who knew his city like the back of his hand, but he also traveled extensively all over the world and most often, but not exclusively, would post to questions about Eastern and Central Europe, London, and Paris.
He never engaged in nonsense, just articulate, patient, kind, precise, and utterly reliable travel information.
He is a loss to the online travel community.
