cotswolds and?

Country forums / UK & Ireland

Hi!
I'm going to UK for two weeks from 13th august to 27th. Having decided at the last moment I have to plan everything in a hurry. I decided to visit Cotswolds the first week, so the first question is? Where to base? I already booked for two nights close to CastleCombe, so I was wondering I you could help me finding a little town to stay the other 4 days from I can walk or bike to the best spots.
The second week I really don't know. My flight leaves froma Bristol so I thought about Cornwall but it's difficult to find accomodation. What about Islands of Scilly? do they worth a visit? Travelling alone I was thinking about find a place to stay and get everyday to any different island. The other option is Wales or Yorkshire. I don't have a car so I really don't know if Yorkshire or Galles are good options, because I need do stay in the same place fro 4-5 days and from there visit.

Thanks anyway!

The Cotswolds don't really require a base as such.

We stayed a night at Chipping Campden (lovely town, nice pubs indeed) then travelled:

Chipping Campden > Moreton-in-Marsh > Stow-in-the Wold > Upper / Lower Slaughter > Burton-on-the-Water > Burford > Cirencester ... and then spent a further night at Shrivenham. But I can't possibly envisage how you would do all this without a car.

And after you deal with that issue, you need to think how you can construct a second week using public transport. Have you looked the UK YHA website - to see where their hostels are? It's usually a good guide to setting an itinerary - including for people who are not driving.

Can't advise on the Scilly Isles.

I would be looking at places you can reach easily if you do not have a car, Castle Combe is not exactly easy. Your other issue is this is summer holidays, hence why you find it difficult to find anywhere in Cornwall. For Yorkshire you will have a long trip with trains and to get to small places is a real pain without a car, Wales is not that much better. I would rethink the not having a car, especially if you want to see small villages and such.

Thanks so much both of you. Jingili, I looked at the hostel web site! Richiavo, I'm actually going to stay two days in Corsham, close to the train station, and from there walk to Castel Combe one day. I'm looking to find another spot maybe in the east part, closer to Oxford. I really can't have a car, I'm travelling alone and usually don't rent a car if I'm by myself but prefer public transport. Cornwall I agree with you, too much crowded. So I'm going to decide between Yorkshire and Wales...

Had you considered New Forest. Publictransport quite good at least on main roads, direct train from Bath to Salisbury and Southampton, interesting small cities like Salisbury and Winchester, beaches mostly pebbles but plenty ofsea air and lots of walks - see New Forest website. It will of course be busy in August, but so is everywhere else
