Car rental in Scotland

Country forums / UK & Ireland / Scotland

Hi.

My wife and I are Americans and are going to Scoland next week. We want to rent a car in Glasgow for 7 days of driving around the country.

Does anyone have any advice on renting a car?
- Where to rent from
- International / local companies
- How to get the best deal

Thanks in advance.

Your leaving it late in day to get any "deals"
tell us what research you have done already ?
where are you intending to go during your
7 day trip ?

I guess I don't mean "deals" as much as good prices.

I have looked at the international companies: Budget, Alamo, etc. and started looking on google for "scotland car rental" but admittedly got a bit overwhelmed with the local choices.

We are planning to drive from Glasgow to Aberdeen and a loop around Inverness and perhaps Skye back to Glasgow.

thanks

I used Sixt a few years ago and was satisfied. Didn't really compare prices, but service was good and I had a nice vehicle. Picked up and dropped off at Glasgow airport.

Try Arnold Clark and compare against the majors.

If you're planning on staying in Glasgow city centre to start with, it might be better hiring the car at the end of your Glasgow stay.

4

Try Enterprise, I've found them to be cheap, decent and helpful.

I would try Arnold Clark (biggest "local" operator- actually more or less Scotland wide) and the big international names:

Budget
Alamo
Thrifty
Hertz
National
Enterprise
Sixt
Europcar
and probably some others I have forgotten.

A couple of other companies act as brokers and often have very good deals, especially Auto Europe, but you might get a better deal using their local UK site. Also Holiday Autos, Easycar, etc.

It's impossible to predict which will be cheapest- all of them have good deals on from time to time.

I was impressed with Arnold Clark. good shuttle service from Glasgow airport, and good rates.

7

Try holiday autos, they have cars from £123 a week from Glasgow airport or Ford Focus £150.

Thanks for all of your help, folks!

Just another supporter of Arnold Clark, Scotland's biggest (and local) rental company, here However, some companies have preferential rates for Arnold Clark so you can book them cheaper through the websites of agents like Scotland-Inverness, or Celticlegend. You don't save too much, but you get personal attention and any questions answered. You will have to google them as I don't think you can post url's on this site. There are other agents, but make sure the car you book is an Arnold Clark one.

Enjoy Scotland and try and make it out to the beautiful islands.
