aircraft of choice...

Hi guys anyone ever flow Cathay Pacific or Malaysia Airline?? What’s the feedback?
I’m not looking for luxury, but i don’t want a torn up seat with rats sharing my food :o)

Ouch. To suggest that the national carriers of Hong Kong and Malaysia are liable to be rat infested is a teensy bit.......ermm....how shall I put this?...........culturally insensitive.

In my opinion they are better airlines than, say, Qantas, for instance.

Cathay have a good reputation.

MAS were fined by the CAA for flying into London with too little fuel!

The answer of course is that millions have flown with both these carriers and you don't hear complaints in the paper everyday about rats on board.

i've lost count of the amount of times I've flown long haul, i flew cathay a year ago from Sydney to China and it was okay. You could do a lot worse (eg qantas international). I think Cathay is fine to go with. Singapore airlines have been the best in my experience. Cathay were a little stingy on the food. But then, who cares...so long as you have a bit of room to move and it runs on time..

I'm guessing you haven't travelled much.......

In defence of the poster, I have often had a torn up seat with the internal airline of Indonesia, Merpati, plus broken seat back that slowly reclined as we took off and seat belts that didn't do up (I think they've improved a bit now!). Also, I once had an "afternoon tea serving" from British Airways, many years ago, that included chocolate biscuits pre-gnawed by mice/rats. When I and the person next to me complained, the stewardess was very cross with us for making a fuss.

Nothing to do with you post but I read over the weekend that PIA are likely to lose their licence to operate in Europe.

You are much more likely to get rats on a domestic flight.

#6 Funnily enough I complained to the stewardess on a BA flight from Cairo to Heathrow once about beig raining on by condensation as we took off.

Just before landed in London she slipped be a bag with a bottle of Piper Heidsick and thanked me for NOT making a fuss!

And that reminds me: a friend of mine was once rained on by condensation, and this continued througout the flight. She did not want to arrive soaking wet, and so put up her umbrella to protect herself! The air hostess asked her not to, because it might upset other passengers. No champagne, but that was on Philippine Airlines, not BA.

That was back in 1999. More recent reports suggest that they are a very good airline.

Bottom line: airline quiality is subjective.

#10, I saw that happen to someone on Singapore Airlines too- so it does happen with all airlines.

All they did was sellotape tissues over the area the condensation was coming from, which didnt really work. You could see the tape residue on the wall where they'd obviously done that before, so they knew about the problem but just didnt care.

If it had been me, I would have been REALLY peeved off (it was a long flight, Melbourne to UK).

Culturally Insensitive to ask if there are rats in the aeroplane?? That tends to indicate that the OP was implying a cultural stereotype of some sort and I don't that can be automatically assumed. Surely the OP was simply joking about the rats (ie the opposite of luxury)??

and lots of people ask "has anyone been to <<insert placename here>>. Its just the way the question was formed.

The one suggestion i would make if you weren't sure of one or the other is that Cathay Pacific is a "One World" Frequent Flier Alliance member whereas Malaysia uses their own Frequent Flier Programme (non-alliance based). Often a return flight from Australia to the UK is enough for a return (or at least a one way ticket) when you get back for a nice trip from Oz to the Pacific/New Zealand.

What is it with some worldly people, you know a thing or two about different cultures and immediately you get on the defence over an assumption.
Mrs_Trellis and all other TT folk who have questioned my lazy choice of words, I made reference to poor service ie rats, because they were the cheapest flights, not because of their ethnicity, that hadn’t even entered my thoughts.

Tretower When you quoted my grammatical error, could you have not have thought perhaps I am having the most horrendous week and its only Tuesday, instead, you refer to me as absurd!

Clearly I didn’t write this post to be accused of being a racists, or ‘absurd’ because of my gramma! I just wanted to know if these flights were any good, as they were considerably cheaper.
To be honest, I’m blown away at a lot of you, my word choice was a little off the cuff but honestly, its hardly worth the effort to throw the cane at me isn't it?!

To everyone else that simply took it without the predigest of other posts, or without quick judgement, thanks very much for your posts, I value your opinions and have taken them on board, perhaps even literally when I buy my ticket. I'll pop the brolly in the hand bag!

#16 - I guess she was referring to my post at #3. But I wasn't correcting the spelling mistake - but noting that the question 'has anyone ever flown..' is bound to get a 'yes' -

They aim to fill each and every flight - so millions will have flown with them.

But if I offended OP then sorry - but I too was also slightly offended by the tone of the question. Maybe that's my problem.

Quite apart from the fact that the question states 'aircraft ' of choice when what the OP means (and has been taken to mean) is 'airline' of choice.

I do wonder why people bother answering questions that would not have been asked if the OP had done even basic research. There are any number of web sites where people discuss airline quality, and a visit to any of them would have revealed immediately that Cathay Pacific is regarded as one of the best airlines in the world; perhaps not as good as SIA, perhaps not quite as good as it once was, but streets ahead of the majority. A little more research would have revealed that MAS is very highly regarded by those who have flown on it. The OP naively assumed that because, for the particular travel dates in question, these carriers were cheaper than the competition, there had to be something wrong with them, and did not realised that s/he was being offered a terrific deal.

erm, yes.

She didnt know about airlines, so she came to a travel site and asked a travel question.

What do you want us to do, to all stop asking questions and close down the site?

so now you're not allowed to ask questions about airlines or travel.....you have to have done hours of research and found other sites and forums before you post a simple question here... you have to spellcheck and use correct grammar....hmm so what are the other rules about posting these days? i'm getting a little hesitant in case i have a question to post sometime soon that isn't deemed worthy of being asked in a - travel forum. :/
if some people find it so tiresome and annoying to read (completely reasonable) questions like the OP asked, why don't you just steer clear of the post and save your unhelpful replies.

as for the original question: i have flown cathay and they were good (have a family member whose a captain so maybe i'm bias anyway)...singapore is still my first choice though. every time ive flown qantas international i've been disapointed. sorry don't know about malaysian airways..
