All sounds doable to me.

Based on MY interests I'd have more days in London, and take that from Glasgow and Cambridge. But if you prefer more time in those places, why not?

Easier to get to York from Edinburgh than Glasgow by train....

I think your road-trip revision means a far better holiday. Travel as light as you can! Yes ... the Cambridge / London mix could readily be reversed ... it seems rather too long in Cambridge, even as a base.

As mentioned previously you might find Edinburgh to York is easier, perhaps visiing Glasgow once is better.

Just another thing to consider !!!....instead of Dublin you could fly to Knock from London and to Glasgow....book early and you could get this quite cheap. This would mean you could visit some lovely places like Westport (good place to stay), Clare Island, Galway amazing farmers market on Saturdays ...and a host of other places.....far nicer in my opinion than Dublin. You would only do this if you want smallish places though and are willing to be in those places with damp weather. Journeys around this area would be mostly by bus. Given all the cities you are visiting it might work for you.

If you get to York make sure you visit Harrogate very easy on the train.

Glasgow to York train is only an hour longer than Edinburgh to York.

Not a massive amount in the scheme of a one month,6 stop trip...

And I reckon the central city of Glasgow is a more pleasant and interesting place than Edinburgh. But certainly visit Edinburgh and - if you can - Stirling Castle.

And flying to Knock Airport in northwest County Mayo could be good, as can be Westport, Donegal, and Sligo. If the fares and times work, and if the buses really work for you as well.

And of course, balanced against how much you wish to visit Dublin.

If you don't mind changing trains, from Glasgow travel via Carlisle and Leeds to York. The carlisle -Leeds section is the famous www.settle-carlisle.co.uk and one of UK's most scenic railways. All trains are just normal trains at normal prices, but if you and junior are OK changing trains in Carlisle and Leeds this is a worthwhile journey.

Thanks again for the continued suggestions! You all are amazing and so helpful with ideas and logistics.

I’m only allowing 4 nights to Ireland, but am totally open to the idea of visiting Galway instead (though I do read that busses are not super regular from Knock)... I’m going to have to look at flights and see what makes the most sense to get there in line with the bus timetables. I also worry that baby won’t love the added travel... its worth considering though.. I do prefer smaller towns to cities wherever possible.
