Dear Friends,

My husband and I are planning a babymoon in Ireland, and I was hoping to get your take on our itinerary so far. We will rent a car and drive between all destinations. I am a little worried that it's too much driving, but on the other hand we are talking about the southern section of a small country - so maybe it will be okay? Let me know what you think - this is both of our first time there:

Day 1 - Dublin
Day 2 - Dublin (same place as Day 1)
Day 3 - Midlands (specifically Slieve Bloom mountains area)
Day 4 - County Galway (specifically staying between Galway City and Connemara National Park so we can decide what we're up for upon arrival)
Day 5 - staying at same place County Galway
Day 6 - County Kerry (Ring of Kerry)
Day 7 - Dingle
Day 8 - Cork City (as a jumping off point for whatever is in the area that we want to do)
Day 9 - Cork City (staying at same place)
Day 10 - Dublin (staying at airport hotel before flight the next day at 11:30am. Figured we could visit Powerscourt or Glendalough as we head from south to north - so more of a focus on those sites than Dublin itself.)

Forgot to mention that we will be going in mid to late July!

Such itineraries can have a lot more clarity if you list where you're staying each night, rather than what each day contains.

That aside, the Galway County > Ring of Kerry > Dingle > Cork City > Cork City > Dublin section needs some work.

This would be my suggested alternative, to reduce some long daily drive-times, and back-tracking:

  • Night 05 - Galway (after Connemara)
  • Night 06 - Limerick (after Cliffs of Moher)
  • Night 07 - Killarney (after Dingle Peninsula)
  • Night 08 - Cork (after Ring of Kerry)
  • Night 09 - Kilkenny (after Cork / Blarney / Cashel)
  • Night 10 - Dublin Airport (after Glendalough)

Still a bit of driving per day, but nothing outrageous. Cork > Dublin including Glendalough is too much in my view, and Kilkenny is a classic Irish city. If you're not totally wedded to Cork, Killarney warrants two nights.

We stayed at the Premier Inn Dublin Airport and it was good value (plus included a shuttle).
