Note the York Ebor race meeting commences on Wednesday 22 August. This is the biggest horse race event in the north of England, lasting 4 days, the city will be crowded and hotel prices high. If you're into horse racing this is the place to be - if not, make sure you leave by the Wednesday morning.

This is the kind of advice I need... thanks! We will keep away then. My cousin (same age as me) owns like 15 thoroughbreds and doesn’t shut up about them, and prioritized watching them PRACTICE over spending time with his full extended family. He’s not even lost his money to the sport (yet) and it’s already negatively impacting the family.

On that note, do you have any alternative recommendations?

I have a couple of cousins-in-law who seem addicted to horse-racing too (I refuse to call them thoroughbreds ... since they are mostly unhealthily inbred cripples destined for the petfood factory). They miss events and keep their families poor and almost housebound.

I suppose the obvious alternative would be Lake District > Carlisle > Hadrian's Wall, but that has its own issues in terms of traffic and crowds. I would still plump for York ... I'm sure you'll find suitable accommodation that isn't too affected by the horse-flesh frenzy.

Either leave Wednesday morning for Edinburgh, or have an overnight on the way. Durham has been mentioned - or an alternative would be somewhere like Hexham for a proper look at nearby Hadrian's Wall. If you choose Hexham, follow the A68 road for some beautiful views of the more rugged landscape of the north Pennines.
