I am arriving in Edinburgh at 6pm on a Sunday (late June) and trying to get to Thornhill - I couldn't find any buses online, does anyone with local knowledge know of one? Or will I have to stay in Edinburgh overnight and take one the next morning?

Hi all,

this summer I'll do a bicycle round trip in Scotland. Starting from Edinburgh I plan to get north to Inverness, then west following the Caledonian Channel taking the way to Skye and the Hebrides, south again to Oban, Loch Lomond and Stirling.
I am already sure about the route, but I'm thinking more and more about the direction of the trip, as the wind in Scotland can be very hard and I don't want to get along with around 3 km/h because of the strong head wind.

I am planning to do some walking in Scotland between May 18th and 22nd. I will be in Edinburgh the days before and would then like to choose one base (thinking about either Fort Williams or Portree on Isle of Skye) from where I can do some nice easy to moderate day trips. I’m planning a trip to Scotland in July 09 and are planning for part of the trip on walking either the Great Glen Way from Fort William to Inverness or the West Highland Way from Glasgow to Fort William.

My questions are:

How long does it take to do these walks?

Which walk would be better from the prospective of scenery? I’m into beautiful scenery and the odd castle if possible.

I have a query here to anyone who has travelled by Megabus before.

Basically, I have a look at their website under the Help tab and they are saying that no ticket will be issued and passengers need to show booking reference number to the driver.

So, do I have to print out the booking confirmation and show to the driver? Or show an SMS from Megabus detailing the journey time, date?

My wife and I are planning a holiday in Scotland and Ireland in September. We are planning on renting a car for some of our time. Is September a good time to visit these countries? I'm planning to stay on Isle of Tiree for some days end of May.
I think about staying with the isle's hostel.
However, since the hostel is quite far away from the ferry terminal I wonder whether it is possible to rent a bike somewhere near the ferry terminal
