Grateful for any advice on where to stay on the way back from Oban to Glasgow. Taking a road trip through Scotland over the Easter break. Itinerary is currently:
* two nights in Glasgow;
* one night in Oban;
* one night in either Inveraray, Callandar, or somewhere else that we haven't even thought of but you might suggest.
Thanks for any advice offered.
From Oban, Inverary is closer but harder to get to. If you are driving then this shouldn't be a problem.
Inverary: You can stay in the hotel on the main street for about mid range price which is just round the corner from the famous Jailhouse & old courtrooms. There are also some trips available on the loch and as it is a small town you will have no problems getting some advice on these in the pub. The locals are very friendly. The George itself (I cant actually remember it's name but its the biggest pub/hotel) has a lovely restaurant selling fresh seafood from the loch which is brought in mostly by local fishermen in the area. Although quite pricey it is well worth it for the taste. Inverary Castle is also worth a look.
Callendar: Much more central with public transport to Edinburgh, Stirling and Glasgow but more touristy and with less of a Scottish out the way feel. Lots of hotels, BnBs, campsites and a youth hostel nearby. In the middle of the town is the visitor center with leaflets on all activities which include walks, white water activities and cycling routes. There are also several mountain biking hire shops and outdoor shops selling OS maps. You are a short drive from Ben Lomond (40 mins ish) and if you fancy a smaller hike to the top of a munro Ben Ledi is right next to it. Technically not a mountain but referred to as Scotlands smallest munroe by some.
Near Loch Lomond Itself is the Loch Lomond Youth hostel as well as several camp sites and BnBs. You should have no problems finding somewhere to stay.
Just be aware that getting to some of these accommodations will be more difficult without a car and the roads can take you all the way round/up/past the loch! Take a satnav if you don't want to waste time.
have fun :-)
Thanks for your suggestions Katie.
We ended up hiring a car when we got to Glasgow and stayed the night in Croftamie. Will have to put Inverary on the list for the next trip.
We drove through Callendar and were really relieved that we weren't staying there. I think it was over run with bank holiday visitors.
We were really lucky with the weather and had a really wonderful time in Scotland. Was exactly the break that we wanted. So spoiled for choices up there.
We'll definitely be back. Such a beautiful part of the world.
