While the Grassmarket may have some rowdies at throwing out time, it is a VERY good location for the rest of the 24 hours in a day. I don't expect a single woman with any street smarts whatsover to be walking around alone when the pubs close. I'd also suggest that it's far less safe to be doing so at that time of night in any out of the way suburb.
