I am travelling to Edinburgh on my own in a couple months and need to book accommodations. Is there any area I shouldn't stay in? I was looking at the Grassmarket Hotel. A budget hotel but looked half way decent.

Would appreciate any advice.

Cheers!

Anywhere in the city centre should be fine. The less attractive parts of Edinburgh tend to be the outskirts.

I recommend you try the Boreland Lodge Hotel. Their rooms are clean and cozy enough and the staff are very attentive to the guests' needs. It's located just outside Edinburgh but still proximate to the city. Google their website for more info.

Premier Inn is another in Haymarket, GBP67. Stayed at the one in Lauriston Place and that was good.

I will check these places out. Thanks so much.

Grassmarket is a very good location. This hotel was a Premier Lodge previously and is fine.

The Grassmarket is a good location. DON'T stay in the Boreland Lodge- it's in Inverkeithing which is NOT just outside Edinburgh, it's 20 minutes by train and is an ugly town.

Inverkeithing is actually quite an interesting wee town - plenty history. I wouldn't stay there though.

You won't be saving any money, you'll have more transport costs, and public transport is a hassle (no late trains, late buses only at weekends).

The Grassmarket is probably THE most violent place in the whole of Edinburgh late at night, thanks to its huge concentration of pubs and clubs that, when they close, spill mobs of people onto the street at regular intervals in the small hours out of their heads on drink and drugs. I wouldn't recommend it for a woman on her own.

It's also the bottom of a valley and you don't have a view of much except up to the Castle.

There are backpacker hostels all over the city centre in safer and more attractive locations.

Still, even the Grassmarket would be better than trying to see Edinburgh from Inverkeithing.
