hello!
i will be in edinburgh april4, 5 and 6 and was wondering if anyone had suggestions for a place to stay that's close to populated areas (downtown) and safe. i'm planning on booking a hotel for my first night and then booking a hostel for the next night or two. as far as the hotel is concerned, i'm looking for clean and reasonably priced (under 100 usd).
in glasgow, i'd love some suggestions for hostels that are close to the action as well.
thank you!

Being a resident of Edinburgh I don't use the hotels/hostels so unable to recommend. However suggest you go to www.visitscotland.co.uk.
Can I update you on two points. This is not America so 1) we have city centres rather than downtowns and 2) everywhere is safe !

Hi there,
I was backpacking in Scotland last year. Stayed in Bus Station Backpackers Edinburgh Hostel - great place, clean and very homey, if you're not looking for party atmosphere. It's within walking distance to the Royal Mile, that's where the tourist attractions are and also walking distance to all the main shopping malls. Easy connection from the airport using the airport shuttle. However there are not many rooms, so you have to book in advance. Another minus point is that public parking for cars may be a problem if you intend to rent a car. What we did was to get around Edinburgh on foot or public transport, then rented a car to the Highlands.
As for Glasgow, we stayed at the Euro Hostel which is smack in the centre of the city, so is very convenient to get around on foot and bus or the Underground system.

I stayed at the Travelodge.

It was just a place to stay, but the room was clean and they had security.

It was $140 US a year ago, so it might be close to $100 now?

I am not fully-recommendng it, but it was fine. Maybe I could have found something for 20 pounds less, but I did not feel like looking.

And agreeing with post above- you'd be hard pressed to be mugged in Edinburgh.

Hi

The Premier Inn in Glasgow is near George sq and should be cheapish, failing that the Novotel or any other Premier Inn or Travel lodge are good try the one at Charing cross to cut cost a bit more but is still only 5 mins from shops. For a hostel , the euro hostel is good and is very central . I think there is one in edinburgh too just google euro hostel glasgow.

Cheers

Scott
