Any recommendations for a place to stay in Kyle of Lochalsh for one night at the end of May? We are flying into Edinburgh from New York and taking the train to Kyle of Lochalsh the same day. (Our ultimate destination is Isle of Skye). We want something clean and comfortable in KofL, after a long day of traveling ...

Try http://www.visitscotland.com/shop/accommodation/ for ideas, most people stay on the Isle of Skye. Are you hiring a car to explore Skye ? Could you bear driving that day as well ?

I would also suggest a night in Plockton (5 miles from the train station) cute wee village and will get you a quiet nights' sleep for sure.

Depending on when you're coming, you should book in advance, Skye is very popular.

I assume you are coming off the continental flight ? And then is your route to Inverness and the train across ? That's a long journey in one day.

Thanks alidoll, for your quick reply. Perhaps I should provide some more detail. We'll arrive on the train in K of L at 20:30 on a Friday night, and we have accommodations booked in Portree, Isle of Skye as of the next day (Saturday). We intend to rent a car either Friday night or sometime on Saturday (and we'll pre-book this once we confirm where we'll do it).

Our one-night stay in Lochalsh, then, would really be just a stopover on our trip from Edinburgh to Portree. We'd looked at connecting from the train to the bus in Lochalsh and traveling through to Portree on Friday night, but the connection time to the last bus to Isle of Skye is tight (10 minutes). Given that, we thought it might be preferable to stay one night in Lochalsh and make our way to Portree on Saturday morning.

So, our ideal for accommodation in Lochalsh would be something in walking distance from the train station. We'd then either pick up our rental car or take the bus to Portree on Saturday morning (and pick up a rental car there).

Many thanks for any advice on all of the above. What do you think of our chances of catching the bus to Isle of Skye coming off the train from Inverness at 20:30?

Thanks!

p.s. conversely, what do you think of the possibility of renting a car in Lochalsh on Friday night? Is 20:30 too late to do that? Would it still be light driving onto Skye?

http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/areakyle/guest.html and use google maps to work out which one is near the station. As you can see there are sooooooooooo many and it's not an area I know as I normally zoom on over to Skye.

I would not allow for connection time of 10 minutes, trains don't always run on time !! You will be exhausted from your journey, so have a good nights sleep and a hearty Scottish brekky to start you on your way.

Don't know where you are planning to hire a car, but google found this http://www.skyecarhire.co.uk/

You MUST eat at the Tongadale hotel, or at least have a dessert there, check out mine from last year, it was for ONE person and 2 of us struggled to eat it http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/edinburghlove/TouristScotland#5281271069939911394 also much cheaper than a lot of places in Portree.

Have fun and enjoy Scotland :)

Hi - it's a small place and they are aware that the train comes in and people are wanting to make the connection to Portree - in my experience they usually waited for the train however flying/train all that way you don't want to risk it!

I'd head over to Kyleakin (short 4 min shuttle bus ride across the Skye bridge) and stay there (much nicer than Kyle!!!). There's the White Heather hotel, King's Arms (not so flash) and numerous B&Bs as well as the hotel at the roundabout whose name escapes me which is supposed to be quite good. Best bit of advice I can give is "Go to Harry's cafe for breakfast!"

There's another post on here about cars on Skye - it can be pretty difficult to hire cars there. The only place I'm aware of is Portree Coachworks but make sure you book ahead. I don't know of any places in Kyle of Lochalsh that hire cars?

You could also consider a taxi up to Portree? Worth getting in touch with the tourist information in Kyle to find out rates.

Cafe Arriba in Portree is also excellent.

Enjoy your trip!

I wonder if the owners of this B&B near Kyle realised what they were calling their B&B.

I truly hope it is not accurate.
